Description
General Statement of Duties
The Deputy Coroner oversees the examination of deceased individuals within the City-County of Butte-Silver Bow, determines the cause of death of a deceased person or persons, completes death certificates, notifies family members, maintains death records, and conducts inquests if death is considered to be sudden, unnatural, or violent. Other duties may include testifying at court trials, and liaising with law enforcement. The Deputy Coroner displays attention to detail, integrity, diligence, and a genuine concern for others.
Duties/Responsibilities
Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Complete and maintain reports and death certificates.
  • Acts responsibly and ethically, and in conformance with generally accepted business, occupational, and professional standards.
  • Notify next of kin.
  • Certify deaths and complete death certificates, including the cause and manner of death.
  • Performs all duties and work assignments in a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound manner. Specifically, complies with the Health & Safety Program; maintains work area in a safe and orderly manner; identifies and reports unsafe conditions; reports all accidents; wears required personal protective equipment; and attends safety-related meetings, training sessions, fit testing, etc.
  • Transport to the Missoula State Crime Lab.
  • Confer with public health officials, doctors, and law enforcement officers.
  • Testify at inquests, hearings, or court trials as required.
  • Performs all duties and work assignments in compliance with project quality requirements.
  • Establish the identity of the deceased.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Remove or supervise the removal of bodies using the appropriate equipment, and arrange transportation to morgues.
  • Record and preserve any personal objects or items that may be related to the cause of death.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to move a body - minimum of 100 lbs.
  • Knowledge of local laws and legal regulations.
  • Strong administration skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical and detail-oriented.
  • Available Monday – Friday on call.
  • Computer skills.
Acceptable Experience and Training
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Required Special Qualifications
  • Must possess a current Montana Driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one within a reasonable period of time after employment.
  • Must be a resident of Butte-Silver Bow during employment according to Butte-Silver Bow Ordinance:
“2.08.010 Residence during employment.
From and after October 1, 1979, all employees of the local government of Butte-Silver Bow shall be bona fide residents within the boundaries of Butte-Silver Bow during the period of their employment by the government of Butte-Silver Bow.
