The Role

The Damage Prevention Specialist will work with the field to help, coordinate communication, analyze locate tickets, establish relationships with excavators, internal and contract locators to meet established department guidelines for Cable Protection in Enterprise Field Operations.

The Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinate efforts of Lumen in-house and contract resources on multiple, concurrent construction activities identified through the 811/One Call systems. This may include gathering and reviewing data using company resources and information received from excavators, determining sites/projects with significant and imminent dangers to the network; and coordinating face-to-face field meetings between Lumen and excavators & provides feedback in support and development of the RAM tool.
  • Works on assignments requiring judgment and initiative within pre-determined guidelines and subject to periodic review.
  • Proficient in 811/Cable Protection statutes for states of coverage.
  • Proficient in fiber mapping database systems.
  • Working knowledge of buried fiber plant installation and protection schemes and systems including
  • Daily, monitoring 811 dig tickets with internal and external locators by utilizing Smart Score within Utilisphere in combination with other programs.
  • LMS and locating systems and locate ticket management through Utilisphere.
  • Working knowledge of excavation practices and processes.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of theory and practices within a recognized field and/or specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Performs a variety of duties involving different and unrelated steps and methods.
  • Interact daily with excavation contractors to limit risk to the Lumen FOC network. Document and track daily using VUC Tracker.
  • Develop and recommend processes and procedures to improve communications with and oversight of, excavation contractors working near Lumen facilities.

What We Look For in a Candidate

  • Demonstrated organizational skills associated with project management.
  • Knowledge of Outside Plant procedures and standards.
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with excavation contractors.
  • Highly proficient in the use of related software to include word processing, spreadsheets, and databases including the use of advanced features such as macros, pivot tables, etc.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from all levels of the organization and a variety of external vendors.
  • Minimum 1-2 years business experience in Construction related job responsibilities or the equivalent in training and experience. (Field locating experience a plus)
  • Independently exercise sound judgment and ensure that issues are brought to the attention of appropriate
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Work overtime hours as needed to meet required timelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple projects/objectives.

This information reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position based on current national data. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. Individual pay is based on skills, experience and other relevant factors.

This position is eligible for either short-term incentives or sales compensation. Director and VP positions also are eligible for long-term incentive.
