Job Summary
Provide counseling services for university students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities
The mission of the Counseling Center is consistent with the mission and goals of Valdosta State University by providing a broad range of personal, educational and wellness services to the university community aimed at maximizing the personal growth and development of its members. The Counseling Center is housed with the Health Promotions and Wellness to equip students with the most comprehensive services possible. In addition, the Counseling Center collaborates with the Graduate School to facilitate a clinical practicum site committed to the training and development of future health and wellness practitioners. Lastly, the Counseling Center staff strives to develop an environment that is grounded in the spirit of inclusiveness, diversity and respect.
Typical Allocation of Duties
Individual and group counseling - 35%
Provide individual and group counseling services to students, faculty, and staff.
Documentation - 25%
Complete accurate documentation and maintain case files.
Crisis intervention - 15%
Provide crisis intervention services as needed both during and after hours.
Outreach and training - 10%
Provide outreach programs for classes, residence halls, campus organizations and special interest groups. Provide in-service programming and training for staff and faculty.
Consultation and referral - 10%
Provides consultation and referral services for both on and off-campus resources.
Provide support for other campus functions - 5%
Provides support services for other campus functions, including testing, admissions, and orientation.
Supervisor Expectations
- Compose routine or specialized reports or forms and business letters
- Ensure compliance with clear guidelines and standards
- Follow technical instructions, procedure manuals, and charts to solve practical problems
- Communicate to convey or exchange general work-related information or service to internal or external customers
Required Qualifications
Required Experience
Master's degree in specified field or related, and one (1) year of related work experience. Licensed or license-eligible in the State of Georgia as Professional Counselor, Marriage and Family Therapist, Social Worker or Psychologist required.

$45,161
Conditions of Employment
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check. Position May Require Credit Check (if using P-Card, working with Cash, etc.).
Position Requires completion of VSU’s Annual Compliance Training course (such as State Business Transactions, Drug Free Workplace, Anti-Harassment Policy, Introduction to Information Security, Workers Compensation, Motor Vehicle Policy, USG Ethics Policy, Conflict of Interest/ Outside Activities Policy, Leave Procedures for Faculty and Staff, Georgia Open Records Act, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and Contracts 101. Supervisory positions require training in FMLA and Worker’s Compensation.
