The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is looking to hire several Correctional Food Services Supervisor 1's in our Food Services unit, located at DOC facilities across Connecticut.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

  • WORK SCHEDULE: All of the positions are full time and scheduled for 36.25 hours per week, either on first or second shift. This is a 5-day work week with rotating weekends and holidays.
  • LOCATION: We are hiring for multiple facilities and applicants are encouraged to select all locations they are interested in.

YOUR ROLE

As the Food Service Supervisor 1, you will be responsible for:

  • Food preparation and serving;
  • Practicing food safety and sanitation by maintaining a clean and standardized workplace;
  • Assisting with food inventory, including food ordering, receiving, food storage and rotation (FIFO);
  • Practicing food safety and sanitation.
  • Supervising and training of food service employees;
  • Planning and implementing kitchen functions;

ADDITIONAL PERKS OF THIS ROLE:

After two years of successful service as a Correctional Food Supervisor 1, the incumbent will be promoted to the position of Correctional Food Service Supervisor 2, with a salary increase to $57,668 and bi-weekly $2,209.51 (not including any future cost of living adjustments.)

This position is part of our Hazardous Duty retirement plan, which means you may retire after 25 years of service, regardless of your age. This position is part of the NP-4 Union. You will have direct contact with inmates of all security levels both as workers and within your assigned facility. You will be responsible for supervising inmates in the preparation and serving of meals.

All Food Service professionals will be provided with uniforms and foot wear.

*Candidates selected for hire will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT. This training consists of both classroom and on the job training (one day of classroom presentation and nine days of “hands-on” physical training.) The Behavior Management Program training will education on the use of physical force as it applies to self-defense, and the maintenance of order and security within the inmate population. In order to graduate, trainees will be required to pass a written exam, as well as a practical skills test which will be scored.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for the preparation, retherming and service of daily meals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • May assist in food preparation, cooking and serving;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in the preparation and serving of complete daily meals in a large scale (500 meals per day) institutional or commercial setting such as a hospital, residential school, extended care facility, rest home, full service restaurant, military mess, large catering business or other similar environment.

NOTE: Experience in fast food operations does not qualify.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in dietetics, hotel, restaurant and/or food service, nutrition or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of one (1) year.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience supervising food services employees, preferably in a large scale institutional or commercial setting (e.g. Hospital, Residential School, Extended Care Facility, Rest Home, Full Service Restaurant, Military Mess or Large Catering Business).
  • Experience in producing large volume (500+) meals per day. This includes; receiving foods, food inventory, food ordering, food storage and rotation (FIFO), food safety and sanitation.
  • Experience with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).
  • Experience managing or training employees.
  • ServSafe Certified.
  • Experience planning and implementing day to day work assignments for staff.
  • Experience handling disagreements and stressful situations while maintaining a high level of professionalism.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to successfully complete a formal training course in correctional work to develop the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the class.
  • Incumbents in this class are required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification at the time of appointment.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required of all applicants upon a conditional offer of employment.
  • Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to significant stress of confinement within a dangerous and volatile prison population and to considerable danger of injury from assaultive and/or abusive inmates and disagreeable conditions.
