Department History Overview

Harris County Resources for Children and Adults was founded in 1966 as Harris County Child Welfare to provide support services for children taken under the wing of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. Fifty years later, Harris County Resources for Children and Adults still provides this support. But the now-county department has expanded services for early prevention, intervention, and adult services.

Food Service Supervisor Overview:

Under the supervision of the Youth Services Division (YSD) Deputy Director, the Food Services Supervisor supervises the food services staff according to food safety standards and ensures food service compliance with the Health Department guidelines. Obtains and documents information necessary for the operations of food services.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Files all receipts for record keeping.
  • Creates monthly menus to meet the standards of USDA calorie recommendations
    • Supervises and assists with the preparation of food items on menus at designated meal times.
    • Communicates with shelter staff and ensures adherence to posted menu.
  • Requisitions food supplies for daily needs and recommends quantities for weekly food and supply order.
  • Conducts bi-weekly meetings and oversees four food service workers involving food preparation, serving, and assembly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Establishes work rules and performance standards in accordance with Health Department guidelines.
  • Supervises and assists with the preparation of food items on menus at designated meal times.
  • Estimates food inventory requirements and controls serving portions, eliminating waste and leftovers.
  • Maintains certifications for all Food Services employees and/or any staff permitted in the Kitchen. Maintains all permits, licensing requirements, and inspections for Food Services.
  • Pays and communicates with Purchasing Department on approving vendors for contracts for food services.
  • Conducts staff conferences, annual performance evaluations, initiates and implements disciplinary actions as warranted.
  • Supervises the food service staff
    • Conducts bi-weekly meetings and oversees four food service workers involving food preparation, serving, and assembly.
    • Schedules and ensures staff is available to cover assigned shifts. Works holidays or weekends as needed to ensure adequate staffing.
    • Maintains on call response for Food Services.
    • Establishes work rules and performance standards in accordance with Health Department guidelines.
    • Conducts staff conferences, annual performance evaluations, initiates and implements disciplinary actions as warranted.
  • Completes meal count reports.
  • Monitors food services budget in conjunction with the YSD Deputy Director.
  • Submits maintenance requests and follow-up with Operations.
  • In coordination with the YSD Deputy Director, works with vendors to order food and other supplies as needed while staying within the allotted budget.
    • Estimates food inventory requirements and controls serving portions, eliminating waste and leftovers.
    • Requisitions food supplies for daily needs and recommends quantities for weekly food and supply order.
    • Responsible for ensuring all groceries and supplies are stocked in a timely manner.
    • Files all receipts for record keeping.
  • Communicates with shelter staff and ensures adherence to posted menu.
  • Requests checks for food services as needed.
  • Responsible for completing all documentation required by Health Department and complies with the minimum standards of Food Service Policy and Procedures daily.
  • Responsible for ensuring all groceries and supplies are stocked in a timely manner.
  • Maintains on call response for Food Services.
  • Processes purchase orders and invoices for food services as appropriate.
  • Schedules and ensures staff is available to cover assigned shifts. Works holidays or weekends as needed to ensure adequate staffing.

Requirements

Education:

  • High School or GED diploma
Experience:
  • Three (3) years full time paid work experience working in a food service setting
  • Training and experience using a personal computer with a variety of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Two (2) years’ experience as a food service supervisor.
Licensure:
  • Must have current Food Handler or Texas Food Safety Manager Certification
  • Reliable transportation with a valid driver’s license (Texas) and auto liability insurance
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior, exercising honesty and integrity, respect, and confidentiality in the execution of responsibilities.
  • Ability to meet the needs of youth with special dietary needs including researching and implementing a personal meal plan.
  • Ability to communicate detailed and often sensitive information effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in self-discipline, dependable, and ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritizing multiple tasks and demands to accomplish outcomes.
  • Knowledge of food preparation methods, portion sizes, and garnishing and presentation of food to ensure that food is prepared and presented in an acceptable manner.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer, utilizing a variety of standard and specialized software, web browsers, and query tools.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques for monitoring and ensuring compliance of all health and safety regulations are met at all times regarding food preparation, serving, and building maintenance.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and honor all cultures while developing monthly menus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with vendors.
  • Ability to work with varying populations daily and adjust food preparations according to current number of meals needed.
  • Ability to handle sensitive interpersonal situations calmly and tactfully.

Salary: $47,299.20
  • Plus Mileage Reimbursement
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
  • -$57,345.60 (Annually)
Work Environment:
  • Must practice safety at all times and be aware of slippery floors, cleaning chemicals, heavy boxes, sharp knives, electrical appliances, hot stoves and other food service environmental dangers.
  • Works in extreme heat conditions operating industrial ovens, grills, and stove top areas.
  • Works in extreme cold conditions stocking, storing, retrieving, and cleaning large walk-in coolers.

Physical Demands:
  • The work requires moderate physica exertion, lift up to 50 pounds. Must be able to operates industrial cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, scales, toasters, food choppers, and a variety of ovens and stoves following health department guidelines.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
