Position Summary


The VP, Corporate Controller is responsible for leading the Company’s accounting operations (team of 21 employees), financial reporting, and control processes globally and ensuring the highest level of integrity and accuracy. The VP, Corporate Controller will be responsible for all aspects of the global accounting functions at Confluent partnering with executive leadership to provide strategic and tactical finance-based decision support. This position will report directly to the CFO and work closely with the Audit Committee, General Counsel, Director of Finance Operations, Financial Sponsors and the Executive Leadership Team.


The VP, Corporate Controller manages a global team with direct responsibility for the monthly, quarterly and annual close processes, oversight of financial reporting, including bank reporting and local statutory filings (Costa Rica & India); Revenue, A/R, A/P, Fixed Assets, Payroll, technical accounting, acquisition accounting & integration, finance integration of acquired entities, equity accounting, ensuring the integrity of the company's financial data and reporting; and leading the external audit process with the Company’s independent auditors. The VP, Corporate Controller is responsible for the Company’s tax strategy, compliance reporting, preparing monthly financial packages with insightful analysis of key variances versus budget, forecast and prior year, which is distributed to the executive team, lenders, and investors. In the event of a public offering, the VP Corporate Controller will oversee SEC reporting and SOX404 controls framework implementation.


The individual will have strong technical & operational experience with a focus on how to effectively scale the function as the company grows. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience across a wide range of financial areas including systems implementation, treasury operations, cash flow forecasting, team-building and executive communication.


Responsibilities Of The Vp, Corporate Controller


  • Prepare the company’s monthly operating review package that includes results, variance analysis, footnote disclosures, and forecasts for the Income Statement, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow Statements for distribution to Leadership, Lenders, and Board Members
  • Responsible for high-risk and elevated-judgement balances including Equity, Stock Compensation, Inventory reserves, annual Goodwill impairment testing, purchase price accounting, and liaising with third-party tax advisor on the tax provision.
  • Serve as a thought partner alongside the CFO, Financial Sponsor, and Outside advisors on M&A opportunities, technical accounting treatment, alternative financing, diligence and quality of earnings assessments.
  • Support the Company’s ERP and related interconnected systems. Work to continuously streamline and enhance back office systems for increased efficiency. Define the vision and lead process redesign efforts, where possible digitizing operations through process automation
  • Team regularly with FP&A / Finance Operations team on providing historical information, recasting financials for improved visibility, month-end close & forecasting, and executing the finance & accounting closing calendar ensuring deadlines are met.
  • Monitor our customers' financial health and provide meaningful analysis to minimize credit risk while helping to maximize sales, managing the Company's credit and collections team
  • Manage compliance with all local legal and statutory requirements for Confluent’s entity and operations in Costa Rica and India, including statutory filings and financial statement audits.
  • Other special projects and duties as appropriate.
  • Serve as principal interface with the independent public accountants for the planning, coordination and conduct of their annual audit and other services across the company and their reporting to the Audit Committee. Present to the Audit Committee on accounting issues impacting the financial statements, controls, and topics of special interest
  • Develop a strategic vision for the global accounting function. Recruit, lead and inspire a global team, develop future financial talent through training and mentoring of individuals, as well as staffing and recruiting of necessary skill sets
  • Stay ahead of future developments, oversee research of technical accounting issues and develop policies and procedures for new accounting standards. Engage with external auditor on emerging trends in accounting rules and judgmental accounting/reporting. Appropriately assess and mitigate risk while balancing the operational and system requirements of the business.
  • Create value for the entire Company by contributing as a strategic and technical partner to the CFO and executive leadership team. Communicate effectively with senior leadership and Audit Committee members regarding financial reporting and control matters.


Professional Requirements


  • Proven success handling and resolving technical accounting issues, including researching and documenting conclusions and coordinating with external auditors.
  • Recognized as a results-oriented leader who inspires exceptional performance out of others.
  • Demonstrated success in operating in a “roll-up your sleeves” environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal; effective and credible presenter to executive management and the Audit Committee of the board of the directors.
  • 10+ years' experience in leading and managing a global team. This leader will be energized by driving and motivating change, in addition to having a transformative mindset.
  • Strategic thinker with excellent analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal, and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to perform under the demands and challenges of being a private equity backed company.
  • Exceptional expertise in MS Excel and PowerPoint to analyze and manage large data sets and transform into information.
  • BA/BS in Accounting and/or Finance preferred. CPA, MBA, and Big 4 experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Epicor 10 (ERP) and Adaptive Planning (Financial Analysis) is beneficial, else experience with upper-quadrant ERP and EPM tools preferred (i.e. Oracle, SAP, D365, TM1, Hyperion)
  • 15+ years of progressive experience in the accounting and finance fields. Recent experience as a senior level accounting professional at a public company with annual revenues of over $300 million within manufacturing or similar industry experience.
  • Experience managing diverse international teams and local statutory and regulatory issues and compliance. Capable of providing a global/multi-national perspective.


Travel Requirements


Incumbents are expected to travel as needed to support business needs and must have the ability to travel across borders
