Job Description
Nxu is seeking an experienced Controller to direct accounting policy and practice and to lead high performing teams. Our ideal candidate has a deep understanding of all fundamental aspects of operational accounting, technical (GAAP) accounting, and external financial reporting. Our candidate will display a passion for developing high performing teams, collaborating with others throughout the organization, driving accounting process improvement, and communicating financial results to internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will have a “make it happen” attitude and be able to face opportunities, challenges and deadlines with creativity and enthusiasm. The Controller will report directly to the VP of Finance and will be a key part of building a culture of success and high performance within the Accounting function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate to create and update accounting policies, best practices and team performance KPIs.
  • Consult with internal partners, peers and stakeholders on to understand the purchasing cycle, production process, inventory management, and sales function to determine proper and complete accounting for revenue, inventory and cost of good sold, and research and development expenses.
  • Manage the audit process, including preparation of PBC items, managing team members and audit deadlines.
  • Oversee the monthly financial close process. Manage the close checklist to ensure the team is on track to meet deadlines and report on close KPI trends (e.g. days to close). Block and tackle for team members to ensure they can complete all tasks effectively and timely.
  • Prepare and review information used in preparation of the financial statements and related disclosures for quarterly and annual external financial reporting and SEC filings. Assist with writing disclosures.
  • Review all balance sheet account reconciliations, revenue and expense accounts and general journal entries.
  • Lead implementation of accounting ERP and financial reporting software platform. Assist in implementation of inventory management and procurement systems.
  • Research and provide consultation for complex technical accounting transactions and issues, including long-term debt, stock-based compensation and other equity instruments, and revenue recognition. Prepare technical accounting memos for significant transactions and accounting issues.
  • Manage the operational accounting process and teams, including maintaining the general ledger and subledgers, recording inventory and losses, recording fixed assets, recognizing revenue and cost of goods sold and recording R&D expenses.
  • Prepare and review information and support for public offerings and related SEC filings, capital funding efforts, and debt and equity transactions.
  • Lead planning meetings for quarterly and annual external financial reporting cycles. Manage quarterly and annual financial reporting calendars.
  • Build process for the full-cycle accounting process, including developing teams and streamlining practices for the accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger and financial reporting functions.
  • Partner to select and manage third party consultants and service providers, including technical accounting consultants, tax preparers and auditors.
What You Bring To The Table
  • Public Accounting experience strongly preferred.
  • Fantastic interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • 10+ years of experience in a technical accounting role.
  • Experience working with ERP systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of organizational skills.
  • Experience with publicly traded companies and SEC filings (either in public or industry practice).
  • Proficient knowledge of U.S. GAAP, specifically as it relates to accounting for stock-based compensation (ASC 718).
  • Solid analytical, mathematical, and research skills.
  • Active CPA license (preferred, but not required).
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • Experience working with financial reporting software preferred, but not required.
  • Experience leading high performing accounting teams.
  • Ability to “manage upward” to ensure that senior leadership is involved in the financial process at the right levels.
