Job Description
Basic Function And Scope Of Responsibilities
The Coordinator of Student Athlete Success will be a student athlete’s point of contact for everything at the University--from academic advisement to getting involved on campus to financial aid counseling to career development--helping the student to chart and navigate an individual path as part of the LIU family. The Coordinator will work with a student one-on-one to create a success plan tailored to his/her needs, goals and interests, helping students to choose courses; select a major; find scholarships, internships and study abroad opportunities and launch their careers. Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic and Career Success, the Coordinator will guide students through balancing their academic commitments with the rigor of their athletic commitments. The Coordinator will keep students on track toward graduation and enable them to make a seamless transition from college student to successful professional.
Principal Responsibilities
  • Interpret career assessment instruments and provide career resources/advisement, developing a timely career track congruent with students’ academic pursuits
  • Assist in pre-enrollment, admissions, orientation, campus, and career activities reinforcing the importance of a collective, integrated college experience geared toward academic and career success
  • Provide academic advisement to each student, specifically through the progression of the initial registration upon acceptance to major/degree selection as it pertains to career interests and pursuits
  • Other duties as assigned by Associate Directors and Director of LIU Promise.
  • Plan and execute campus programming, including campus activities, student success, and life planning seminars, to enhance student life, enjoyment, and effectiveness
  • Serve as primary advisor and success coach for working caseload of student athletes
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in LIU Promise for student athlete success, educating and monitoring athletic academic compliance across the department
  • Support the student experience through the LIU four-year model from pre-enrollment through graduation
  • Coordinate with affiliate departments to achieve program recruitment and retention goals
  • Serve as a liaison between LIU Promise and Athletics, coordinating any student athlete programming, initiatives, and processes for student athlete compliance.
  • Complete weekly and monthly reports that demonstrate progress towards retention, student registration, and other key job performance indicators
  • Prepare students for their transition to the college, and integrate new students into the intellectual, cultural, athletic, and social life of the University
  • Review financial aid information and assist students with understanding financial aid procedures
Principal responsibilities include assisting with the execution of functions under Student Athlete Success.
Area Specialization: STUDENT ATHLETE SUCCCESS
  • Collaborate with the Director of Compliance in monitoring and communicating relevant academic NCAA policies, including, Academic Progress Rate (APR).
  • Facilitate the collection of team schedules for LIU Promise, providing detailed information allowing proper scheduling of classes for student athletes
  • Assist in the preparation of reports to document student athlete academic progress and NCAA continuing academic eligibility.
  • Maintain close communication with athletic staff and coaches regarding academic progress of student athletes.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in student athlete events and programs, attending games, functions on behalf of LIU Promise.
  • Conduct regular individual and team advising meetings with student athletes to promote student registration, retention, and success.
  • Support the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and facilitate LIU Promise student-athlete programming and initiatives.
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s preferred.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • At least 2-4 years of progressively professional experience in higher education, student affairs; sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High energy and enthusiasm to work with students and propel them toward success
  • Computer skills/literacy
  • Ability to design and implement innovative programs with a strong attention to detail
Working Conditions
  • Occasional travel to/from other LIU campuses for the facilitation of trainings, meetings and other university functions.
  • Flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, are required to execute the position’s role responsibly.
