Job Description

Job Summary:

Lifelong is a community health organization committed to removing barriers to health with relentless compassion so that no one faces illness and injustice alone. Chicken Soup Brigade (CSB) is Lifelong’s Food and nutrition department, providing medically tailored meals, groceries, and nutritional counseling and education to community members facing illness and injustice.

The Cook supports the Meal Program kitchen staff at the Chicken Soup Brigade, Lifelong. The cook supports all aspects of the meal program. This position works closely with the Assistant Culinary Program Manager and The Culinary Program Manager to ensure the ongoing production of meals. This is a full-time, non-exempt, union, regular position.


Essential Duties:

  • Completes meal prep with the assistance of volunteers. Obtains recipes using database program. Cooks meals according to meal counts and recipes. Follows recipes as written.
  • Packages meals ensuring portion control is followed according to meal specifications. Confirms volunteers are maintaining portion control when packaging meals.
  • Participates in Lifelong’s Employee performance management process.
  • Completes deep cleaning projects as assigned. Maintains clean and organized workstation. Helps clean kitchen at end of their shift,
  • Support the Culinary Program Manager and Assistant Program Manager in the retention of volunteers. Trains and directs volunteers in food prep and packaging. Remains active in the recruitment and appreciation of volunteers.
  • Works effectively and productively with others (including supervisors, colleagues, and clients).
  • Helps with inventory management by checking in orders, putting orders away, rotating product using first-in first out. Assists with organizing walk-in and freezer.
  • Attends and participates in team and all-staff meetings, team building trainings, and events.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to organize, prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a time-sensitive environment.
  • Preferred experience with high-volume cooking.
  • Experience with preparation of meals for medically appropriate diets a plus.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a commercial kitchen.
  • Valid Washington State Food Handlers Permit and thorough knowledge of food safety practices.


Work Environment

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk up one flight of stairs.
  • All staff are currently required to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination prior to hiring. The use of personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to COVID-19 may be required in the future should exposure warrant it.
  • The cook reports to the Assistant Culinary Program Manager. This is a full-time, union, non-exempt, regular position.
  • Proficiency in English is required, being bilingual is a plus.
