CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS
Under the general supervision of the Public Relations Manager, or designee, the Community Volunteer Coordinator (CVC) will represent the Hernando County Sheriff's Office as it pertains to recruiting, vetting, and placement of all volunteers and by creating and maintaining volunteer programs for the HCSO, including, but not limited to Crime Watch, Administrative Volunteers, Detention Center/Inmate Programs, Judicial Services, Sheriff's Emergency Response Volunteers, etc.). The CVC will be the first point of contact at the HCSO for all volunteer needs. The CVC will be responsible for facilitating and/or attending monthly Crime Watch meetings, quarterly Crime Watch meetings, and attending any off-site meetings as necessary. The CVC will be responsible for activating volunteers as needed for high-priority/critical events, special projects, etc., and for coordinating volunteer appreciation events. The individual appointed to the position of Community Volunteer Coordinator is a member of the Sheriff's personal staff, pursuant to F.S. 30.072(2).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Analyze (yearly) all volunteer programs to ensure each program is running effectively, has become obsolete, requires modifications, etc.
  • Participates in the planning, conception, and design of HCSO exhibits and displays.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with HCSO volunteers and those interested in HCSO volunteer opportunities.
  • Addresses any issues brought forth by one or more volunteers, consulting with Deputy PIO or Public Relations Manager as needed.
  • Coordinates and/or prepares special projects or programs at the direction of the Sheriff or his designee.
  • Receives and processes (background screening) all Level-I and Level-II volunteer applications.
  • Coordinates all HCSO Volunteer Programs. Creates new programs as needed or at the direction of the Sheriff.
  • Responds to scheduled and unscheduled events that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and/or on-call assignments as needed or directed.
  • Assists with the planning and organization of community events, special events, and functions.
  • In addition to background screening, the CVC is responsible for training, certifications, re-screening (every five years), and assignment of all HCSO volunteers.
  • Maintain complete files on each volunteer.
  • Maintains regular communication with the volunteer applicant throughout the background process, letting him or her know if assistance is required to obtain needed documentation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Training and Experience
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent (college preferred).
