Job Description
Job Summary

This position builds community by increasing and enhancing community gardens to address food insecurity in Brown County. Community gardens help individuals and families to grow culturally appropriate healthy foods. This position is responsible for building capacity to enable and empower gardeners to be involved in the day-to-day operations of the garden. This position is also expected to fostering community engagement, working with community garden advisory board, maintaining relationships with land owners, volunteers and gardeners. This is a vibrant program that is growing with additional gardeners being added annually.

Essential Duties

Serves as advisor to the community garden advisory board.

Identifies and follows through on leads for potential new garden sites in strategic manner.

Oversees annual community garden registration, spring and fall garden site preparation, summer maintenance and availability of water, and closure of gardens in the fall.

Maintains and continues to build relationships with landowners, gardeners, volunteers, and donors.

Empowers community gardeners to become more engaged in day-to-day operations of gardens.

Recruits limited income and diverse individuals and families to participate in community gardens.

Looks for new funding sources.

Partners to increase capacity of community gardens to address food insecurity issues impacting limited income diverse households.

Works with Extension Brown County Support Staff to maintain social media presence and update materials needed by community gardeners.

Communicates community garden efforts to stakeholders and funders.

Performs duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education and Experience :
Minimum of Associates Degree, Bachelor’s Degree preferred in horticulture, land scaping, agriculture, community development process or any equivalent combination of education, trainings and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Wisconsin Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of gardening.

Knowledge of community resources.

Knowledge of community development process.

Experience working with limited income, diverse populations.

Experience in recruiting and working with volunteers.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Ability to manage time, and work effectively with indirect supervision.

Ability to seek funding and donations as well as work with funders and grant writers.

Ability to run meetings.

Ability to manage multiple projects.

Ability to work with the media.

Ability to supervise seasonal staff.

Ability to access data to prioritize work to identify need and location(s) future gardens.

Ability to work the required hours of the position.
