Title: Community Engagement Specialist
Department: Community Access
Reports To: Director, Vaccine Equity Partnership & Engagement Program
Location: 30 Bay St., Staten Island, NY
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9 am-4 pm, with some flexibility for weekend/evening events
Pay Rate: This position is sponsored by/paid through the NYC Service, Office of the Mayor; total stipend is $23,800 (pre-tax/gross pay) paid over the ten month program
Community Health Action of Staten Island (CHASI)drives dramatic improvements in the health of New Yorkers by feeding people who are hungry, healing families broken apart by violence, and bridging the gaps between people and the compassionate health care they deserve. CHASI provides outreach, education, prevention, and direct support services for populations most affected by health disparities – people with low or no income, low-income people with chronic illnesses, people with criminal justice involvement, people who use drugs, domestic violence survivors, people of color, and the LGBTQ community.
Position Summary
Vaccine Equity Partnership and Engagement (VEPE) is a program from the Public Health Fund to engage NYCHA residents and community Stakeholders into resources that will allow them to get back to normal after COVID. VEPE provides support to people who have had many struggles and loss during the pandemic and helps find services to assist them with barriers. Member will assist in outreach to identify people who need the vaccine or education on vaccines and booster, especially COVID vaccines. They will also provide one on one conversations and wellness checks to NYCHA individuals to support them with their health needs. Member will coordinate with stakeholders to provide community engagement through community lead events and invite organizations to come out and support NYCHA residents with resources.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Deliver health information using culturally appropriate terms and concepts and link people to health care and social service resources including health insurance, food, housing, quality care and health information
  • Build community trust through service-based work and relationship-building
  • Perform all functions in alignment with CHASI’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values
  • Document services and activities performed as required by agency
  • Assist in developing and executing community events to increase engagement with community members
  • Help people understand their health condition(s) and develop strategies to improve their health and well-being using Motivational Interviewing techniques
  • Solicit and capture community feedback, particularly on community strengths and needs
  • Support community-based COVID-19 response including outreach and education (e.g., providing literature, tabling, COVID test kit and mask distribution, community wellness activities)
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Meet and greet at all VEPE and CHASI locations to speak about the different programs offered and establish relationships of working with one another
  • Learn about the organization and role via meetings with organizational leadership, community asset mapping, and meeting community stakeholders to discuss the project’s impact
  • Provide informal counseling, support, and follow-up, and build individual and community’s capacity to advocate for needs and services
  • Conduct wellness checks for community members
  • Participate in group advocacy and community mobilization activities of the program and serve as a positive example and representative of the organization internally and externally.
  • Complete all required onboarding and Community Health Worker trainings, attend team meetings, and supervision sessions
  • Canvas, table, and conduct outreach with NYCHA developments to engage community members in services and identify health needs
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and crisis intervention techniques and motivational interviewing experience preferred.
  • Agree to and pass a criminal background check if the offer is accepted by the applicant
  • Bilingual (English/Chinese/Mandarin/Spanish/Haitian Creole) preferred.
  • Must be 18 years or older by the start date of the program
  • Willingness to learn new skills and improve upon existing ones
  • A strong motivation for making a positive difference in NYC and NYCHA communities with a commitment to collective action and community organization.
  • Ability to serve full-time for the entire program term (generally M-F 9 AM - 5 PM); must complete a total of 1,200 hours from September 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024
  • Have successfully obtained a High School diploma or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
  • Experience providing coaching, mentoring, adult learning, counseling, outreach, workshop facilitation, and/or group/community presentations preferred.
  • Must be an authorized resident of a NYCHA development or NYCHA Section 8 and a U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or Lawful Permanent Resident of the United States
