Job Description
Overview:
Princeton University’s Center for Statistics and Machine Learning (CSML) seeks a talented science communicator for an open communications specialist position in Princeton, NJ. Reporting to the center’s assistant director, the communications specialist will craft high-quality written and visual content that promotes the center’s research and news, reaches key audiences with messages and stories that raise the center's visibility, and reinforces Princeton's reputation for excellence in research and teaching. The incumbent will interact regularly and closely with faculty, postdocs, staff, administration, and students.
Responsibilities:
Editorial duties will include producing high-quality written and visual content tailored to CSML's channels and audiences. This includes writing brief news and feature items about research findings, awards, or other accomplishments, faculty and student profiles; managing website content and incorporating related photos and/or graphics; and creating, editing and managing social media content. The communications specialist will work with the center's director and assistant director to prioritize story ideas, and is also encouraged to develop additional content ideas applying smart, strategic communications approaches to achieve the center's goals. Other responsibilities may include promoting events, taking compelling photos and videos, executing successful e-mail marketing efforts, and applying basic design principles within commonly used web publishing environments. The successful candidate will be capable of making technical information exciting to specialist and non-specialist audiences, including broad non-scientific audiences. This position will also coordinate with peers at the the Office of Communications, Office of the Dean for Research and others to share ideas and content with broader communications potential.

Content generation and curation:
Report and write news items and other web content. Coordinate with the director and assistant director on the assignment, use and dissemination of longer research news and feature items. Monitor departmental sites for related content and adapt and post to departmental sites as appropriate. Plan and produce content for websites, presentations, posters (for University events), email announcements.

Content strategy:
Publicize the center’s research, news and events, partnerships, outreach and teaching. Evaluate the inventory of existing content. Benchmark peer websites, newsletters and social media. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to advance the center’s strategic priorities, raise the center’s overall visibility and promotes the center’s accomplishments. Oversee visual communications (posters, banners etc.).

Social Media Management:
Develop and maintain social media platforms and manage website to ensure up-to-date content and engagement with stakeholders. Promote news stories on social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn). Monitor affiliated faculty social media accounts and share/re-tweet relevant news.

Project Management:
Oversee print and email publications, annual reports, select multimedia projects, arrange photography and attend photo shoots to enhance web content, and develop graphic identity.

Please include 3-5 relevant work samples of published writing that demonstrates your ability to convey technical information to a broad audience.
Qualifications:
  • Social media: experience managing, creating and/or editing content tailored for various platforms
  • Writing: journalistic approach to making complex topics accessible and engaging to multiple audiences
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft desktop applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), content management systems (e.g., Drupal) and social media platforms.
  • Extremely well organized and expert problem-solver.
  • Attention to detail and customer service are key.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, meet tight deadlines and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work independently and as part of multiple teams.
  • Proven success in managing projects.
  • Demonstrated science-writing experience with experience writing and translating research for scientific peer and lay audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, plus minimum of 3 years’ work experience.
  • Strategy: visionary approach to crafting and executing a communications strategy and content plan
  • Experience in a university setting.
  • Creativity and curiosity in approaching assignments.
