Title: College Success Instructor
Department: SEO Scholars, San Francisco
Reports To: Assistant Director of Program Operations
FLSA: Part-time, Seasonal
Target Start-Date: August 22, 2023
Dates: Fall Semester: Orientation- 8/29 and 8/31; Instruction: Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9/6-12/14
Compensation: $50/hr for 4 standard (required) + 6 flex (use as needed) hours per week
Location: Remote (Pacific Standard Time)
Eligible only to California state residents. Candidates not currently based out of California cannot be considered at this time.

About San Francisco Scholars:
SEO Scholars provides motivated, low income public high school students with a rigorous out-of-school supplemental academic curriculum, college guidance and the leadership development necessary to gain admission to, and succeed at, competitive colleges and universities. SEO Scholars San Francisco is the first expansion region for this program and aims to replicate for Bay Area students the stellar outcomes that the program has delivered in New York City. Position Overview & Responsibilities
The College Success Instructor will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students. This unique role will allow individuals to support rising 10th and 11th grade Scholars to be successful as they embark in their community college class. College Success Instructors (CSI) will audit a college course along with our Scholars and be paid for the hours they are in class and leading their own indepenent lab class. CSIs ensure that Scholars have everything they need to succeed in the class through modeling note taking habits, time management techniques, study skills and communicating constantly with students, professors, and SEO staff.
Key Responsibilities:
Engage in Community College Course - Audit a college course through Chabot College alongside enrolled scholars by attending all synchronous lectures, taking class notes, and completing assignments as necessary. Collaborate with professor to clarify assignments expectations.
Lesson Preparation - Create lesson plans for a weekly 90-minute CSI Lab to support scholar comprehension of the course material, provide guidance on how to complete the required assignments, and ensure high quality assignment completion. Use Google Slides to design lessons to be facilitated in the online classroom.
Online Facilitation - Facilitate CSI Labs via Zoom to gain consensus around understanding of the material. Hold students to high expectations, use protocols for student-driven discussion and group work, and promote depth of understanding via questioning.
Asynchronous Learning - Lead your cohort to work together to complete all assigned asynchronous materials thoroughly and to the highest standards.
Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
Scholar Support – Hold 30-minute office hours before lecture and CSI Lab. Identify students of concern to provide targeted support to ensure successful completion of the course. Create scaffolds, graphic organiers, and supplementary materials as necessary.
Data Collection - Maintain accurate attendance and grade tracking on a weekly basis.
Communication - Respond to scholar emails in a timely manner, facilitate Google Spaces chat, send important reminders on deadlines and assignments, and provide motivating messages throughout the semester.
Collaboration with SEO Staff – Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, meetings, and respond to all emails in a timely manner. Collaborate with SEO staff to communicate Scholar celebrations and/or concerns to ensure we are supporting the whole student.
Dates, Weekly Hours, and Compensation:
Orientation: Orientation will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, August 29 and Thursday, August 31st from 5-7pm. More information will be provided in the onboarding process.
Instruction: Tuesdays and Thursdays, from September 5 -December 14
College Success Instructors are allotted 10 hours per week during their semester seasonal employment, made up of Standard and Flex Hours.
Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working directly with staff or students. CSIs are required to be on Zoom for Office Hours, Lecture, or CSI Lab for a total of 4 hours each week:
Tuesdays: 5-7pm
Thursdays: 5-7pm
Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.
6 Flex Hours allotted per week.

Qualifications:Required:
Bachelor’s degree
Depth of knowledge in college-level study, writing, and reading skills
Online course facilitation experience
Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
Preferred:
Secondary Education Degree and high school classroom teaching experience
Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
Knowledgeable with research-based, culturally responsive, equity-driven, and anti-oppressive instructional practices
