Job Description


      Position Summary:
      The Clinical Quality Abstractor leads, coordinates and conducts clinical data abstraction for assigned regulatory and public reporting requirements necessary for compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other state and national agencies or registries as well as internal reporting as necessary for the support of business objectives. Work involves identifying qualifying populations, managing the overall record retrieval process for abstracting required data, collecting numerous complex data elements from individual patient records, ensuring the integrity of the electronic data transmitted to the established national databases, keeping meticulous records, and presenting results to leadership and other stakeholders. The Clinical Quality Abstractor is responsible for the production of reports addressing variances from regulatory standards or best practice expectations, the identification of significant data trends, outlier values or unusual data that may need additional review by physicians or leadership, and for working with Quality, Informatics, and/or clinical leaders to formulate quality improvement plans to increase compliance and improve patient outcomes. This role may be involved with committees or cross-functional teams and may be responsible for providing data reports for use in quality improvement activities. The Clinical Quality Abstractor is accountable for maintaining current knowledge of TJC and CMS standards, patient safety goals, and other regulatory requirements impacting matters within their assigned scope of responsibility and for maintaining current knowledge of data abstracting methodologies and clinical informatics. This position requires a high level of critical thinking, proficiency in data analysis, and an attention to detail. Must be self-directed, self-motivating and able to plan and conduct work with minimal direction.



      Education/Experience:

      • Previous project management, quality improvement methodology, and/or healthcare informatics experience preferred
      • Associates degree in Nursing
      • 2 or more years of acute clinical care experience in a hospital setting
      • Previous experience with quality measure analysis, reporting and regulatory requirements




      Special Knowledge/Skills/Certifications/Licenses:

      • Ability to problem solve and make decisions
      • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with internal and external stakeholders
      • Critical thinking, analysis, and research skills
      • Ability to use/learn a variety of reporting tools
      • Ability to communicate effectively using both oral and written communication
      • CPHQ (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality) certification preferred
      • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data, measure specifications, and regulatory requirements
      • Advanced computer experience/skills
