Job Description
Application Instructions
Please list all professional experience and explain any gaps in employment history. All of your application materials, which may include PDF files of work samples and/or links to audio, video, photography or graphics, must be uploaded to the field labeled Resume/Cover Letter/Work Samples to be considered for the position.
The Washington Post is seeking an energetic and versatile reporter to join our Climate Solutions vertical, telling stories of the ways that humanity is working to address the planet’s most vexing and profound environmental problems.
We are at the dawn of a new age of climate solutions, an era when governments, companies, scientists and ordinary people are putting unprecedented effort into slowing the warming of the planet — and into adapting to the effects already felt around the world. We also see massive interest among our audience in ways people can take measures in their own lives to reduce their climate and environmental impacts.
This reporter will use a wide range of storytelling formats to help readers to better understand this era, unpacking the promise of emerging solutions as well as pitfalls and trade-offs. Topics can range from solutions being proposed at a planetary scale to innovations that reduce carbon or other environmental footprints to changes that people can make in their everyday lives.
Given the vast landscape of the beat, this reporter will need to have boundless ideas and be a fast learner who enjoys working on shorter- and longer-term stories at the same time. They will identify ideas, themes and developments before others and demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging a general audience.
As one of the two anchors of the Climate Solutions vertical, this reporter will be expected to produce rich narratives, stories done in partnership with our visual journalists, and shorter news pieces and features during the week.
Experience covering climate and the environment is helpful but not required. Applicants should be able to convey complex concepts to a broad audience and demonstrate they can dig into climate and environmental subjects with ease and authority.
Candidates should upload a résumé, a cover letter explaining their interest in the role and three to five clips [all as one PDF] to our jobs portal. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, but those received by 07/21/2023 will be prioritized. Cover letters should be addressed to Climate & Environment Editor Zachary Goldfarb, Deputy Climate & Environment Editor Juliet Eilperin, Climate Solutions Editor Ana Campoy and Managing Editor Krissah Thompson.
