Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The position of Chief Operations Officer (COO) requires a senior-level managerial experience in scaling an organization and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. The COO position requires a leader who is able to collaboratively create and drive the goals and direction of the organization’s strategic plan. The COO will ensure that the execution of the plan is cost-effective and successful. The COO will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to this mission as well as bring efficient and effective systems to increase the organization’s productivity, while retaining the current momentum of the Team.

RESPONSBILITIES:

Reporting to the CEO, the COO will lead internal operations as assigned, with a primary focus on strategic growth, partnerships and long-term planning to ensure ultimate success of BGCAA.

The COO will have the following overarching responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively as part of the Executive Leadership Team to include the CEO, Chief Engagement Officer, Chief Finance Officer, and Chief People & Human Resource Officer to develop and participate in creating organization-wide partnerships and strategies for the purpose of continuing to enhance new processes and approaches to achieve success.
  • Serve as an active member of the Resource Development Committee and Finance Committee.
  • Work with the board of directors: present to the board at quarterly meetings and serve on board committees as requested/required.
  • Work directly with the Chair of the Operations Committee to drive organization-wide recommendations for strategic growth.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Finance Officer to support the annual organizational budget process and align it with the organization’s strategic Operations and Resource Development Plans.
  • Provide for all staff a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridge all operations and support an open-door policy among all staff with regard to idea sharing, think-tanks and potential strategic growth opportunities.
  • Serve as a peer leader and team member of the organization.
  • Evaluate, Identify, and present strategic geographic and program partnership growth opportunities and priorities for consideration between the Executive Leadership Team, the CEO and the Board.
  • Work collaboratively with the Leadership Team to coordinate the annual organization plans through strategic analysis and offering supporting information to drive tactical direction.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chair of the Operations Committee to ensure the activation and engagement of a board/staff Safety Committee.

KEY QUAILIFICATIONS:

§ A demonstrated belief in the core values of BGCAA and be driven by its mission.

§ A demonstrated passion for breaking new ground to lead change.

§ Proven experience in scaling a multi-site organization.

§ A demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, diverse team.

§ Prior senior management experience with a non-profit organization.

§ Experience in managing a “values-driven” organization.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Capacity Building: ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a topnotch workforce and the processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly.
  • Relationships: must demonstrate a strong proclivity to working with others from a position of listening and willingness to seek to understand all perspectives before acting.
  • General Management: thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of organization functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing.
  • Leadership and Organization: strong capacity for managing and leading people;
  • A team builder who has experience in scaling organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower topnotch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down, cultivate entrepreneurship.
  • Action Oriented: enjoys working hard and looks for challenges; able to act and react as
  • Necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of a situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary.
  • Results: Proven track record of exceeding goals and bottom-line orientation, evidence of the ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, experience, and judgment; high level of business management acumen, including successful financial management and the ability to balance the delivery of programs against the realities of a budget; problem-solving, project management, and creative resourcefulness.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE DESIRED:

§ Ability to think, assess, analyze strategic challenges and opportunities in support of organizational growth and sustainability vision and goals.

§ Working knowledge of budget preparation, control, and management.

§ Ability to communicate ideas effectively to staff, board and the public.

  • Ten years’ experience with increasing responsibility in leading Sr. Executive level teams through growth strategies and successful demonstration of setting, and exceeding goals at the macro and micro-organization levels.
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college or university

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Be able to perform other duties as assigned or requested by supervisor.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

§ Ability to stand for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions—hot, cold, rainy, etc.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours outside of “normal” business hours.
  • Ability to move equipment up to 25 pounds.
