(Job #528814) Administrator IV, Chief of Staff, Salary Range $9,167 - $29,425 monthly. Anticipated Salary is: $183,000 annually, with expected criteria of experiences and credentials being met by the incumbent. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12-month pay plan position in the Office of the President. This position is an Administrator IV in the California State University Management Personnel Plan (MPP). Under this plan, incumbents are subject to normal management reviews and serve at the pleasure of the University President. Position Summary: The Chief of Staff provides a high level of support to the University President, assisting in the daily operations and administration of the university. As the primary liaison between the President’s Office and other university entities, the Chief of Staff serves in a highly visible position, yet often working confidentially behind the scenes to manage matters which are complex and of a highly sensitive nature. The Chief of Staff addresses issues related to campus personnel and works in accordance with University Counsel on legal matters. The Chief of Staff collaborates closely with associates at the Office of the Chancellor. The assigned responsibilities of the Chief of Staff are considerable in scope and complexity requiring the exercise of initiative, sound judgment, and a high degree of knowledge in matters related to academics, athletics, and administrative programs. The Chief of Staff should possess a thorough understanding of the overall organizational structure of campus and all campus related groups. Reporting directly to the President, the Chief of Staff is expected to understand the views, attitudes, and philosophy of the President as they will represent the President and Cal Poly Humboldt in developing and fostering positive relationships with community leaders and local organizations.


Key Responsibilities


Directs operations in the Office of the President:


  • Responsible for operational oversight in assigned areas of program, budget, personnel, and administration.
  • Assists the President with the supervision of staff reporting to the President.
  • Plans and coordinates events in collaboration with the President’s Aide, Events Coordinator, and other key personnel.
  • Works with the President on special projects of interest.
  • Coordinates responses to issues and proposes solutions to problems directed to the Office of the President, with appropriate involvement of other University constituencies and groups. Identifies areas needing attention and discusses implications, priorities, and approaches with the President.


Supports And Represents The President


  • Represents the university and the President on key committees, boards, and councils as assigned.
  • Assists the acting designee in representing the President during their absence.
  • Prepares materials for use by the President in speeches, public presentations, written reports, and correspondence.
  • Researches and provides background material on emerging problems, evaluates material, and proposes recommendations leading to the solution of such problems.

  • Knowledge of federal and state equal employment and nondiscrimination requirements with the ability to explain and interpret policies, procedures, laws and regulations
  • The ability to develop cohesive networks with other campus offices, system offices, and community groups and organizations
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of conflict management skills with a proven ability to manage conflicts
  • Demonstrated experience working in a complex workforce environment including working with academics, professional staff, represented employees, and student workers
  • Ability to handle complex and confidential matters with good judgment and within demanding time frames
  • Highly developed and effective communication and follow-through skills
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of, and/or the ability to quickly learn, relevant higher education, CSU and campus policies and regulations
  • A proven sense of integrity and strong commitment to the Office of the President
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with community leaders and local organizations on sensitive issues
  • Ability to maintain good communication with CSU legal counsel, successful experience in conducting investigations and responding to complaints in the areas for which this position is responsible


Minimum Qualifications


  • Master’s degree
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible university, government, or political experience


Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, especially within a higher education setting
  • Experience serving in an advisory role reporting to a senior leader
