Job Description

The Animal Defense League of Texas (ADL), adltexas.org, is San Antonio's oldest no-kill shelter for abandoned, abused, or neglected dogs and cats in South Central Texas. Over the years, our mission has expanded from providing basic shelter and care to finding permanent homes for thousands of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens annually. ADL takes in rescued cats and dogs, provides medical treatment, nutrition, and shelter in a safe, live-release facility until adoption. ADL advocates for responsible pet ownership through community education and partnerships with City of San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) and community-based animal welfare organizations.


Position Description:

Animal Defense League of Texas seeks a highly qualified, professional leader to serve as its Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the strategic processes and operations of the organization that result in pet adoptions that save the lives of homeless and abandoned companion animals (dogs and cats) in San Antonio, managing and retaining an experienced and talented staff, and overseeing a current fiscal budget of $ 6 million, demonstrated experience & accomplishments in fundraising, financial management, and budgetary oversight are required. Experience leading a successful capital campaign for a non-profit organization and specific animal industry experience is desired. The candidate must advocate for animal welfare and humane treatment and build strategic relationships with municipal animal welfare organizations and collaborate with national and local non-profit animal care and welfare concerns. The position requires extensive external relations across the community and serves as primary spokesperson for the mission.


Responsibilities:

The CEO reports to the ADL board of Directors. The responsibilities and duties associated with this role include:


Leadership and Strategic Planning:

• Provide visionary leadership, establish organizational goals, and develop long-term strategic plans to advance the organization's mission and objectives.

• Collaborate with the board of directors to define the organization's direction and ensure alignment with its values and strategic priorities.

• Oversee the implementation of strategic initiatives and monitor progress toward goals.

• Manage the impact and performance of the organization (or lack thereof) and provide regular communication and performance data to the board.

• Develop and update the organization's business plan and key strategies aligned with short-term and long-term objectives.

• Set clear operational and financial goals aligned with the organization's strategic plan and

vision and make necessary changes to address environmental variables.


Operations Management:

• Manage the organization's day-to-day operations, including overseeing staff, volunteers, and program activities.

• Develop and manage the annual budget, ensuring financial sustainability and effective resource allocation.

• Establish and maintain organizational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

• Provide oversight for the organization's day-to-day operations; guide the direction and future strategy of the organization in coordination with the board.

• Ensure prudent use of all assets, including facility, human resources, and goodwill.

• Assemble and grow a high-performing team and provide leadership to achieve the organization's goals.


Fundraising and Financial Management:

• Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure financial support from individual donors, corporate sponsors, grants, and other funding sources.

• Cultivate relationships with donors and stakeholders, including maintaining ongoing communication and stewardship efforts.

• Ensure the organization's financial stability through sound financial management practices, budget oversight, and fiscal accountability.

• Ensure direct engagement in critical initiatives such as the ADL Capital Campaign to replace aging infrastructure, all binding contracts, and significant grant requests.


Advocacy and Public Relations:

• Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the organization's mission, raising public awareness and promoting the organization's initiatives.

• Build and sustain outward-facing, collaborative relationships with key stakeholders such as municipal leaders, community leaders, other animal welfare organizations, donors, media, the general public, and volunteers.

• Represent the organization in public forums, conferences, and other relevant events to advance its goals and influence animal welfare policies.


Governance and Board Relations:

• Work closely with the board of directors, providing regular updates on organizational activities, financial performance, and strategic direction.

• Collaborate with the board to recruit and onboard new members, ensuring a diverse and effective governing body.

• Support the board in governance matters, including policy development, board meetings, and committee activities.


Program Development and Evaluation:

• Oversee developing and implementing programs and initiatives that align with the organization's mission and address key animal welfare issues.

• Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, making data-driven decisions to improve outcomes and maximize impact.

• Foster innovation and adaptability to respond to emerging animal welfare challenges and opportunities.


Organizational Culture and Team Development:

• Foster a positive organizational culture that values teamwork, collaboration, transparency, and a shared commitment to animal welfare.

• Recruit, hire, and retain qualified staff members, providing mentorship, professional development opportunities, and performance feedback.

• Encourage a culture of learning, continuous improvement, and innovation within the organization.


Qualifications:

• At least ten (10) years of proven professional, managerial leadership experience with a non-profit organization ($ 6 M annual revenue or greater) or commercial (community-based small business) of $10M annual revenue or greater. Experience working in the animal welfare industry is strongly preferred. • A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university and a master's degree in business with operational/supply chain focus strongly preferred.

• Experience in working with large, complex budgets ($6 + million); ability to make difficult budgetary and operational decisions to support organizational goals and sustainability

• Experience running fundraising initiatives of $10 Million or greater using proper financial compliance/management.

• Knowledge of volunteer recruitment and organizational involvement towards multiplying organizational success.

• Excellent communicator who uses concise, easy-to-understand language to help staff and employees understand how their roles and responsibilities impact the organization.

• Collaborator with staff, key stakeholders, and board to understand constituent needs and collectively work toward mutually beneficial solutions.

• Attentive listener with an open mind and innovative mindset.

• Approachability and transparency –demonstrate success in achieving results through others and building a high-performing team and culture.

• Ethical role model for staff, employees, board, volunteers, and community. Experience building a culture of trust, transparency, and accountability.

• Knowledge of the San Antonio municipal structure and community culture is strongly preferred.


Local Travel Required:

30-40% of time spent building outward-facing relationships and participating in community meetings and activities.

Compensation:

Animal Defense League offers a competitive benefits package. Overall compensation commensurate with talent, experience, and education.


Salary Range:

$150,000 - $190,000
