Description:
The Facilities Department at Gladstone Institutes is looking for a motivated individual, with exceptional building engineer skills, to be its Chief Building Engineer. The person in this position will perform operational management
and daily administration of the engineering team while working to protect and improve the value of building system assets and maintain regulatory compliance. The successful candidate must have thorough knowledge of all building systems and equipment, as well as Building Automation Systems, ensuring the integration of each component, and operation at the optimal level. The new Chief Engineer, in addition to managing a staff of (3) Building Engineers, will help develop and implement a strategic plan for preparing and equipping a 20-year old building for the next 20 years, with an emphasis on energy efficiency. Problems are highly varied, complex and often non-recurring, requiring novel and creative approaches for resolution. New concepts and approaches may have to be developed. Incumbent will work with Sr. Director of Facilities and Facilities Manager to oversee and direct all aspects pertaining to building operation, and will provide occasional status reports to Senior Management on all things related to building equipment and systems.
Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for working to ensure that building equipment that is at, or near their end-of-life expectancy, are either replaced like-for-like, or upgraded to more efficient models, in a timely and seamless manner.
  • Provides and leads emergency response support to facility and lab operations, both during and after-hours emergencies, utilizing all the resources at their disposal.
  • Oversees as well as conducts regular inspections and maintenance of building equipment and systems.
  • Supervises the work of building engineering staff, including: planning, assigning and scheduling work; reviewing work and ensuring quality standards; training staff and overseeing productivity; and making decisions on hiring, termination and pay adjustments.
  • Navigates and utilizes Building Management System (BMS) for monitoring and troubleshooting of building equipment and systems. Works with BMS service vendor (Siemens) on ensuring that all systems are communicating with the BMS, and the operating programs for each set of equipment are correct.
  • Works in conjunction with Facility Manager to manage facilities work order ticket system, prioritizing work orders appropriately. Chronicles and logs equipment work histories in CMMS database, and is responsible for keeping these work histories current and up to date.
  • Performs other duties as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains a professional, working relationship with external vendors.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED. Completion of certificate and/or apprentice programs in HVAC, refrigeration, boiler operation, or the like, is highly desired.
  • Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of journeyman level experience with Central Plant HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical, Building Automation and Emergency Power and Life Safety/Fire suppression systems.
Hiring Range:
$150K-$190K
