Job Description
Key Purpose

The Chief Engineer utilizes advanced skills to perform complex preventive maintenance and corrective repair of buildings, industrial systems, vehicles, equipment, and grounds. Working under limited supervision, the Chief Engineer monitors building system operations and performance. He/She/They utilizes several trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, roofing, heating, and cooling.

The Chief Engineer also provides O&M for building systems of other facilities as assigned.

Ideal Candidate Experience

  • Strong leadership ability, problem solving, time management, and the ability to speak competently and confidently in front of a customer is essential
  • Certifications/licenses as may be required by local or state jurisdictions
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding
  • Must be an experienced journeyman and/or even Master level professional
  • Universal EPA certification required. OSHA 10 mandatory, OSHA 30 preferred; additional certification in one or more of the following: electrical, mechanical, HVAC and refrigeration systems, process controls, mechanical power transmissions, painting, plumbing, carpentry or engine repair
  • Master level HVAC ideal
  • Decisions made with general understanding of procedures and company policies to achieve set results and deadlines
  • Requires intermediate analytical skills
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
  • Experience with building automation/building monitoring systems and any CMMS programs that capture PM and reactive work orders
  • Uses computer and / or PDA for email, inspections, LMS and training
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence including CEOP’s and MOP’s
  • Ability to effectively present information to an internal department and/or large groups of employees
  • Requires basic knowledge of financial terms and principles
  • Ability to calculate simple figures such as percentages
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from clients, co-workers, and/or supervisor
  • Basic skills with Microsoft Office Outlook

Key Accountabilities

  • Complies with all applicable codes, regulations, governmental agency, and company directives related to building operations and work safety
  • Inspects building systems including fire alarms, HVAC, and plumbing to ensure operation of equipment is within design capabilities and achieves environmental conditions prescribed by client
  • Oversees and inspects the work performed by outside contractors; contracted work includes landscaping, snow removal, remodeling, HVAC, plumbers, and cleaning; performs assigned repairs, emergency and preventive maintenance
  • Completes maintenance and repair records as required; reviews assigned work orders, estimates time and materials needed to complete repair, orders necessary materials and supplies to complete all tasks
  • Performs welding, carpentry, furniture assembly and locksmith tasks as needed; responds quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed
  • Maintains an energy management program to ensure measures are taken to operate all systems in the most efficient manner to keep operating costs at a minimum; maintains the building lighting system, including element and ballast repairs or replacements
  • Minimal supervisory responsibilities in this position; may provide informal assistance such as technical guidance and/or training to coworkers, may coordinate work and assign tasks
  • Ensure plant operations including HVAC, minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; high/ unsafe places; fumes/airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration
  • Must be able to work under pressure and time deadlines during peak periods
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and/ or carry 80 pounds or more
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch/crawl daily
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
  • The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud

The annual salary range for this position is $140,000 - $156,000. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and skills, and may vary from the range listed above.
