Job Description

Northern Defense Industries, LLC (NDI), an AMS Group, Inc. Company, is seeking a Chief Engineer to provide technical leadership for the NDI business unit. This role is responsible for leading all technical efforts including Engineering Development, Research and Development and Production Programs. The Chief Engineer will lead all program engineering efforts, with a major focus on an International Country-Wide Maritime Surveillance program.
This role also requires experience leading in a matrix functional engineering organization, delivering development efforts with proactive project management, and support proposals to win new business. This role has ultimate accountability for the successful execution of engineering activities across all business phases. This includes, but is not limited to, engineering/product strategy, technical offering, estimating, milestone execution, process adherence and employee retention. This position will be responsible for defining and implementing the future design and development processes required to transform the business from mostly build-to-print to a full capability engineering design house.
Candidate must be able to receive an Active Secret or Higher Clearance with ability to maintain clearance throughout employment.
This is a hybrid position and requires frequent travel.
Essential Functions
  • Reviews program risks/opportunities and identifies opportunities for engineering improvements (people, process, and tools).
  • Ensures program staffing demand for engineering is forecasted and updated for a 12-month ahead view and partners with the Functional Leaders to ensure staffing demand is fulfilled.
  • Requires ability to communicate and influence leadership regarding matters of substantial importance to the function or business area; frequently conducts briefings to senior leaders.
  • Responsible to grow and maintain engineering staff and maintain a low attrition through employee engagement, transparency, and an ability to continuously adapt to evolving environments.
  • Responsible for technical issue resolution, ensures root cause is identified and/or risk is adequately bound.
  • Work requires a high degree of responsibility for resources, and frequently influences business decisions made by leadership.
  • Execution of Process Improvement initiatives.
  • Responsible for program design change approval and ensures technical readiness for design reviews.
  • Support new business pursuits and proposal activities, own PCs, IRAD and Capital planning/execution planning/execution.
  • Apply strong technical and customer requirements knowledge in technology to develop and drive product strategy.
  • Ensures product qualification baselines are maintained.
  • Accountable for engineering execution on programs within and across business unit (cost, schedule, technical).
  • Recommends and operationalizes strategies that have a direct impact on the mid- to long-term engineering achievements.
  • Ensures engineering initiatives are adopted, process & procedures are continuously improved and followed.
  • Engineering lead for program accomplishments, issues, highlights, weekly status.
  • Owns and develops tactical and operational plans and goals for the engineering team.
  • Recommends and implements new products, processes, policies, standards, or operating plans in support of business strategy.
