Job Duties And Responsibilities
- Assumes responsibility for personal appearance by adhering to the Petersen Health Care dress code
- Resident Care Process
- Assists in dressing, buttoning, typing and snaps
- Performs responsibilities in a cooperative manner under the guidance and supervision of professional nursing personnel. Uses time constructively and organizes assignments for maximum productivity.
- Provides for the psychosocial needs of residents
- Adhering to facility policy regarding absenteeism and sick time
- Maintains current knowledge in present Nursing Practice (in-servicing and continuing education) including the Mandatory Educational Activities as Fire Safety/Evacuation Procedures, Blood borne pathogens and proper body mechanics)
- Giving appropriate explanations
- Answers call lights
- Assists with standing, lifting, transferring and ambulating residents
- Demonstrates responsibility for own Standard of Practice
- Reporting for work as scheduled and on time
- Maintaining communication devices (nurse call light, TV and telephone and other such equipment)
- Change Process
- Frequent hand washing
- Records all nursing procedures and basic care on appropriate forms
- Assessment – Makes appropriate decisions regarding notifying the nurse responsible for the resident
- Utilizes techniques of infection control such as:
- Assists the nurse or physician with minor treatments and procedures as assigned
- Non-Verbal
- Planning – Plans organization of assignment in order to complete assignment in a timely fashion
- Measures and records fluid intake and output
- Adapts to change brought about by external and internal forces in a cooperative and mature way
- Using supplies efficiently

- Provides post-mortem care
- Cleans residents jewelry as needed or upon request
- Provides for the safety and security needs of the resident by:
- Communicates pertinent information regarding resident care throughout the tour of duty and at change of shift to the responsible nurse
- Assists with admission, transfer and discharges of residents
- Making frequent checks on residents and responding to the resident’s call for assistance in a timely and appropriate manner
- Utilizes appropriate and professional body language
- Avoiding work-related injuries through the application or proper practice techniques
- Cleans wheelchairs and Geri-chairs on a regular basis and as needed
- Measures temperature, radial pulse, respiration and blood pressure
- Demonstrates support of the philosophy of Petersen Health Care by adhering to policies, procedures and established Standards of Nursing Practices
- Collects specimens – urine, feces and sputum
- Identifies areas appropriate for change in a manner that demonstrates a positive attitude
- Maintains appropriate supplies of gloves and other personal protective equipment
- Standard precautions and disease specific precautionary techniques
- Demonstrates receptivity though active listening
- Carries out basic hygiene measures including but not limited to the following: grooming, shaving, applying make-up, oral hygiene/dental care, cuts/cleans nails, fingers and toes, foot care, skin care, bathing/showering and cleaning incontinent residents.
- Passes ice water and assists residents with hydrations
- Communication
- Facilitates change process in a manner that demonstrates a positive attitude
- Verifies that all dentures, glasses and personal items are marked with proper resident’s name
- Distributes nourishments, feeds residents and records % of dietary int
- Consistently communicates in a manner that demonstrates a positive and cooperative attitude
- Gives and removes bed pans, urinals and performs Foley care
- Role Development
- Integrate cost effective measures nursing practices by:
- Role Involvement
- Assists in organizing residents drawers, closets and rooms
- Turns and positions residents to prevent pressure areas
- Being willing to work in a team approach to accomplish goals
- Listens to and hears resident and family anxieties and relays this information to the nurse
- Implementation
- Executes procedures consistent with interdisciplinary care plan, Petersen Health Care Procedure Manuals and that are within the scope of the role of the C.N.A.
- Written
- Completion of the Certified Nurse’s Aide course or be enrolled in a Competency Training Program leading to certification in less than 120 days from the date of employment
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
- Work overtime as necessary
- Be able to read and follow written directions
- Be of legal working age
- Be able to communicate with residents and co-workers in English
- Must have the current federally required vaccines or proof of a valid exemption.
- General knowledge and understanding of state and federal regulations as they pertain to long term care
