Job Description

District Sales Manager - Central Region

Interested in an opportunity to join a leader in the pump industry? The Gorman-Rupp Company, headquartered in Mansfield, Ohio, has been designing, manufacturing, and selling pumps and pumping systems for use in water, wastewater, construction, industrial, original equipment, agriculture, fire protection, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning, and other liquid-handling applications for over 80 years.

We have an immediate position open in our Central Region for a District Sales Manager. This position is responsible for all sales related activity in an assigned geographic area primarily through distribution and will be located in the region. The District Sales Manager will be responsible training, direction and assistance of all distributor, OEM and rental organizations within the territory. In addition, the District Sales Manager is responsible for consistent feedback to the home office concerning distributor sales performance, expenses related to the job, competitive information, product development needs that are iterated by the distribution and pricing information. The

District Sales Manager is also required to develop and maintain the required contacts and relationships with distribution and customers to ensure the company’s products are given sufficient opportunity for sale. The

District Sales Manager is responsible to provide feedback to the distribution relative to their performance against company expectations as well as provide the conduit to educate the distributor sales force on existing and new products and services. The District Sales Manager is expected to travel sufficiently to maintain customer/distributor relationships as well as develop a thorough understanding of the business climate within the territory.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

Assumes responsibility for maintain required contacts (written and verbal) with distributors, OEMs in the assigned territory.

  • Assist with service, warranty and engineering issues when requested to do so by the respective departments
  • Work and share adequate and appropriate information amongst other Gorman-Rupp markets, departments in order to drive sales and cooperation
  • Maintain required contacts with distributors, OEMS, rental houses and end users as needed to adequately support the needs of the territory
  • Serve as liaison to resolve territorial disputes between Gorman-Rupp markets and territories
  • Manage the assigned distribution within the territory to ensure Gorman-Rupp has the best possible distribution promoting, selling, inventorying, and servicing its products. Suggest distribution changes where appropriate.
  • Maintain adequate communication (preferably quarterly) with distribution to discuss goals, potential and actual performance, promotional material, campaigns, advertising, inventories, obsolescence, service and new products
  • Schedule sales training meetings and assist distributor personnel with specific sales and application issues
  • Maintain consistent communication (weekly) with Supervisor via phone, call reports, expense reports and competitive reports
  • Provide home office with consistent and accurate forecast of sales potential for assigned territory as requested
  • Maintain a keen awareness of territorial developments in order to advise both distribution and home office
  • Assist Gorman-Rupp personnel with the investigation of customer/distributor complaint and/or warranty resolution as requested
  • Provide home office with comments and suggestions for product development, product improvement, pricing, and competitive programs
  • Assist distributor sales personnel with customer calls as required to penetrate accounts and grow territory sales
  • Evaluate, plan and perform the appropriate distributor training to enhance the overall knowledge of Gorman-Rupp products within the distribution

Assumes responsibility for preparing and presenting sales materials/reports and attends required meetings and training seminars.

  • Plan and arrange work for efficient coverage of territory at minimum expense consistent with the required results
  • Prepare and present sales and service presentations/classes to distributors and customers
  • Attend sales conferences, trade shows, distributor events and local symposiums as needed to promote

Gorman-Rupp products and services

  • Other duties as assigned or directed.
  • Approach the aforementioned responsibilities so as to maximize the potential profit whilst minimizing the risk to the company
  • Adhere to the guidelines, policies and procedures with the discharge of the job responsibilities including; company owned vehicles, computers, phones, credit cards and confidential data.

Education/Certification

Four (4) year degree

Experience Required

Ten (10) plus years of pump experience in a technical related field with exposure to the sale of products through distribution.

Previous sales experience in a fast paced environment and the ability to multi-tasks is essential

Required Knowledge

Demonstrated proficiency in the use of MS Office® product suite

An in depth understanding of pumps, hydraulics and principles associated with the application of pumps.

Skills/Abilities

Ability to read and understand mechanical and electrical drawings

Must be comfortable with public speaking in front of large groups

The position requires an individual that has a gregarious personality with strong presentation and negotiation skills.

Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position

Ability to travel extensively by car and plane.

Ability to sit for long periods of time.

Ability to stand, sit, reach, grasp, stretch.

Working Conditions

Typical office environment along with frequent exposure to travel situations.
