The Opportunity


This position works out of our Abbott Park location supporting our Global Procurement Services business.


As the Category Procurement Manager, Construction, you will manage and execute high value category management goods and services that balances stakeholder management, transaction management, category management, and supplier relationship management to unlock value in the construction services area for small to large capital and expense projects. The role is global in strategy setting and functional in North America.


What You’ll Work On


  • Lead team members in and actively executing sourcing new suppliers, diverse suppliers, and strategic supplier management.
  • Collaborate with Global Engineering Services in the alignment of specific projects with most beneficial project delivery vehicle.
  • Develop Category Strategy & Sourcing Strategy to enable strong partnerships with contractors while maintaining market competitive prices
  • Manage and oversee interfaces with key internal stakeholders to optimize project delivery through efficient procurement of design and construction services.

  • Drive internal and external relationships at all levels, including Sr. Leadership, to enable successful Sourcing partnership with the key stakeholders.

  • Lead team members in and actively executing sourcing new suppliers, and strategic supplier management.

Selection, Contracts Process & Awards


  • Experience with executing contracts in the range of $5MM to $250MM
  • Extensive experience in general construction contracts, construction manager at risk contracts, and design-build contracts execution with strong understanding of legal terms and concepts.
  • Collaborate broadly with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure appropriate review, approvals, transactions, and documentation to support compliance and due diligence while developing and standardizing business processes.
  • Responsible to oversee and drive negotiations through contract award for services and materials listed above.
  • Oversee and manage the issuance of contact documentation and purchase orders after resolving all contract terms and conditions.


Leadership & Management


  • Ensure interfaces with all key internal stakeholders to optimize cost & efficiencies of each project.
  • Organizational skills to manage a large volume of complex assignments independently and effectively with minimal guidance.
  • Mentor/coach regional and local procurement professionals.


Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in construction management, engineering, supply chain management or business. MBA preferred.
  • Experience with Project Management Processes
  • Minimum 5-7 years professional experience in construction related sourcing, negotiating, and contracting, with a track record of meeting and exceeding goals and objectives.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point (or note Microsoft Office)


Preferred Qualifications


  • Excellent category management, sourcing, negotiation, analysis, and contracting skills for multiple, large scale, construction projects.
  • High level of commitment to customer service and teamwork using diplomacy.
  • Strong track record of building and maintaining solid relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Strong follow-up skills: ability to multi-task, meet timelines and follow up with internal and external customers.
  • Self-motivated; able to work both independently and in teams.
  • Experience with, and understanding, of industry best practices in the execution of construction projects utilizing planning and design services, major equipment and furniture procurement, general construction fixed price bidding, construction manager at risk competitive proposals, and facilitation design-bid proposal process.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present ideas and suggestions clearly and effectively.
  • Professional certifications preferred (C.P.M., CPSM)
  • Demonstrated success in working collaboratively across functional and business groups.
