Requirements And Preferences


The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Business Development Manager (Sports and Special Events).


Broward County's Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau (Visit Lauderdale) is looking for an experienced business development manager to recruit and grow sports events and special events (festivals, concerts, etc.) in Broward County.


General Description


Provides creative leadership through marketing initiatives, destination branding, content creation and the promotion of Greater Fort Lauderdale.


Works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.


This position will be responsible for developing relationships, selling events on Broward County as a host, and providing sponsorships to events to ensure that the events deliver the biggest benefit to Visit Lauderdale and Broward County. The successful candidate will have prior experience working with (or for) a large event producer and will have negotiated event and/or promotional sponsorships to create mutually-beneficial agreements.


This position will be visible to stakeholders in the community, particularly events, hotels, and facility management. The successful candidate will have a history of building and maintaining relationships with people in these roles.


Selling is a dynamic function; the appropriate candidate will be willing and able to adapt to and implement changes to the sales efforts of Visit Lauderdale.


In the event of a disaster (hurricane, etc.) all Broward County employees become emergency workers. This position will assist in various emergency functions as-assigned before, during, and after a disaster. This includes, but is not limited to, working at a general population shelter during a hurricane.


Candidate should be proficient in Microsoft Office, CRM (Simpleview or similar), Cvent, LinkedIn.


Minimum Education And Experience Requirements


Requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business, marketing, hospitality or closely related field.


(One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.)


Requires four (4) years in hospitality, tourism or convention sales/marketing experience related to the area of assignment.

Duties And Responsibilities


The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.


Provides creative leadership and standards for the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Convention and Visitor's Bureau (GFLCVB) internally, including the integration of branding, advertising imagery and messaging into all print and digital materials.


Oversees all aspects of the GFLCVB website, mobile site and apps, including content creation, branding alignment, search engine optimization and the collection and analysis of data and reporting; manages partnership with web development companies.


Provides marketing support to the departments; composes and designs targeted print, digital and presentation materials to support sales efforts of GFLCVB teams in tourism sales, convention sales, sports development, marketing, multicultural development and office of film and entertainment; serves as the primary liaison between the GFLCVB and the advertising agency to implement the advertising plan.


Develops and executes community outreach activities and promotional initiatives which involves coordinating schedules (venues, speakers, media) and dissemination of data (event details, industry information); gathers, organizes, analyzes, examines and/or evaluates data or information and may prescribe action regarding the preparation and completion of publicity, marketing, and collateral materials.


Creates new accounts, updates accounts, has information sent out to hotels and venues; registers for tradeshows and arranges for all the materials to be shipped; books travel; checks and reports status of meeting space at the convention center; submits space requests to the convention center; arranges the appointments and emails site itineraries to hotels for site inspections; sends out invitations to clients for events.


Attends various trade shows and/or conferences to promote Greater Fort Lauderdale as a viable option for conventions/conferences/meetings; oversees audio/visual library and digital images and responds to public inquiries involving multimedia, as well as provides logos, messaging and artistic direction for promotional items.


Evaluates results of campaigns and initiatives using metrics including visitor numbers, conversions, return on investment (ROI), media value, and hotel sentiment.


Coordinates and executes site inspections of the area for meeting planners considering Greater Fort Lauderdale (includes driving and entertaining clients); participates in major industry trade shows and educational conferences (requires travel); participates in destination previews for meeting planners.


Updates list of clients and partners in the County customer relationship management (CRM) database; communicates regularly with My Meeting Planner clients through the CRM database.


Evaluates and identifies growth opportunities to increase and achieve targeted international room night goals through developing and executing various sales and marketing strategies for assigned markets; works daily with Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport (FLL) to establish new international routes to the destination.


Conducts solicitation to national organizations to encourage convention and tourist activities in Broward County; develops and gives trade show presentations; responds to inquiries from potential clients and the general public.


Assists with the completion of special projects such as reports and research projects for internal customers; coordinates and participates in outreach programs and training activities; provides technical assistance to internal and external customers; calls prospective and former clients to book their business and send out leads on their behalf; follows up on leads sent to hotels and/or the Convention Center.
