Building Maintenance Mechanic ($5K New Hire Bonus Payment)

About NRHA Founded in 1940, the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) provides low-income families in Norfolk, Virginia with safe and well-maintained housing. It also plans and administers large-scale residential redevelopment programs within Norfolk.

About the Position NRHA seeks qualified candidates for the position of Building Maintenance Mechanic. The job holder performs routine maintenance, repairs, and replacements at public housing apartment units and buildings. The position is located at the Grandy Village public housing community, located at 3151 Kimball Terrace in Norfolk, Virginia.

Key responsibilities of this position include:

  • Performing routine grounds maintenance assignments.
  • Upholding local public housing community standards.
  • Processing work order documents.
  • Operating a standard motor vehicle to transport equipment and tools.
  • Performing routine care and cleaning of shop equipment.
  • Maintaining a safe and clean workplace.
  • Performing routine structural, plumbing, appliance, and electrical maintenance assignments to repair apartment units.
  • Making repairs and replacements to prepare apartment for new tenants.
  • Performing routine painting assignments.
  • Monitoring work and assuring that the community complies with federal, state, and local housing regulations.
  • Processing standard work documents, such as work orders.
  • Assisting in moving furniture, supplies, and other items for transport as needed.
  • Receiving training to maintain knowledge and skill in apartment repair, including maintaining any required certifications.

About the Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for this job will have:

  • A high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • The ability to lift 20-pound objects.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible apartment maintenance experience.

A current and valid driver's license, and a satisfactory driving record, is required for this position.

Candidates with one or more of the following job-related experience, training, and certifications will be preferred over other candidates for employment: Vocational training in general maintenance, construction or mechanics.

NRHA offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. The current pay range for this position is from $29, 577 to $51,459. The compensation offer will be determined by the candidate's work history and skill set. Benefits include retirement, health, dental, vision, life insurance, and tuition reimbursement, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, and more.

NRHA offers a total of $5,000 in bonus payments to new hires in this position. A 180-day employment period is required to qualify for the full bonus amount.
