NREL’s Site Operations group is looking to hire a Building Automation Technician (aka Building Automation System Technician, Controls Technician, or Applications Technician) to support building automation system (BAS)-related daily facility operations and maintenance activities, new construction projects, and the energy management program. NREL’s BAS comprises hardware and software including controls, monitoring devices, instrumentation, and associated programming. Work with state-of-the-art building controls technology for facility operations and maintenance, laboratory ventilation, and energy management.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Support construction projects, including reviews of BAS submittals, reviews of BAS programming, automation system inspections, supervision of point-to-point checkout, and commissioning.
  • Modify existing and create new building automation programming to implement sequences of operation that correct deficiencies, improve performance, and reduce energy consumption.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot BAS network communications and hardware, in collaboration with NREL ITS.
  • Follow NREL’s environment, health, safety and quality policies and procedures to maintain and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities and establish preventive maintenance schedules for facility automation systems and equipment, including meters.
  • In collaboration with NREL’s energy management team, plan, implement, and maintain energy and water savings measures identified via annual Energy Independence and Security Act audits and continuous commissioning.
  • Perform and assist with moderately complex maintenance, repair, modification, inspection and operation of facilities building automation and associated equipment and systems. Supports facility operations and associated mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and correct BAS performance issues.
  • Perform BAS-related on-call services as necessary.

Basic Qualifications
Relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope in industrial automation technology, industrial equipment maintenance, electronics technology, manufacturing technology, industrial instrumentation and controls, and 7 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Working knowledge of building automation systems, HVAC/R, software, IT, construction, mechanical, or electrical maintenance or equivalent. Must have (or be able to obtain) and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Must have (or be able to obtain) and maintain a valid Colorado driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Basic knowledge of facility systems and associated mechanical and electrical equipment, including lighting control systems, building IT, alarm systems, and software.
  • Previous operations experience with building automation systems.
  • Experience with SkySpark energy management software.
  • Experience with Delta Controls BAS hardware and software.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Facilities Tech IV / Annual Salary Range: $62,000 - $102,300
