Job Description
REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Bridgetender (Will Call position).

The Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division (HBMD) maintains and improves the County's highway/street system, operates and maintains three bascule bridges, over 90 fixed bridges, and oversees the mosquito control operations. HBMD is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of fixed and bascule bridges, storm-water drainage system, sidewalks and curb ramps, street resurfacing and patching, guardrail maintenance, and landscaping maintenance.

Work involves the responsibility for operating a mechanical bridge in such a way as to ensure safe passage of waterway, automotive and pedestrian traffic. Duties and responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Clean and maintain the tender house in order (involves sweeping, dusting, mopping, cleaning windows, restroom and work area).
  • Follow and adhere to directions for appropriate operations of the bridge and passage coordination in accordance with United States Coast Guard, State of Florida Statues, and local ordinances.
  • Must be able to report to work on time, work eight-hour shifts, and be able to stay pass shift, if relief does not show up.
  • Maintain watch for approaching water traffic and operates bridge and traffic control devices in response to proper boat signals.
  • Effectively communicate with marine vessel captains, pedestrian and vehicular traffic, and the pubic to coordinate passage, by phone or short wave marine radio.
  • Keep records of daily bridge operations and prepares required reports. Report abnormal equipment behavior or activities to Supervisor or Superintendent.
  • Must be able to climb stairs or steps in order to access bridge house.
  • Must be able to use e-mail software (Microsoft Outlook) and use computer-based time clock system.

General Description
Raises bridge on request of boat traffic.
Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures, but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires three (3) months work experience involving duties related to those performed in drawbridge operation and maintenance work.

None.

Note: The work hours for this position are set on an as needed basis with a maximum of 29 hrs. per week with no guarantee or defined schedule.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Raises and lowers bridge spans, ensuring vessel safety during their passage through the bridge by safely opening and closing bridge span.

Records span lifts and vessels, logs boat traffic.

Cleans bridge house and maintains an orderly work environment.

Communicates with public via shortwave marine radio.

Communicates with the public crossing the bridge to provide directions or instructions to their activity on the bridge.

Communicates essential operational information to oncoming bridgetender during shift turnover.

Observes vehicular and pedestrian traffic to ensure their safety.

Reports all problems/issues with bridge and/or bridge house verbally to bridge supervisor/bridge mechanic and records on a daily report.

Performs related work as assigned.

Performs light to medium work that involves observing, sitting, climbing, walking, standing, stooping, jumping, stretching, or lifting some of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or exceptional skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
