We are seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist to join the Discovery Sciences and Technologies (DST) Department and contribute to our biochemistry and cell biology capabilities to enable the identification and nomination of small molecule and biologics drug candidates across all therapeutic areas at Gilead.


DST Department members are responsible for the design and execution of rigorous, quantitative, and physiologically relevant in vitro biochemical and functional cellular assays. They collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to discover and evolve drug candidates from lead identification efforts during project inception to the characterization of the final development candidate.


The successful candidate will be an integral member of the DST research team and work closely with various Research functions such as medicinal chemistry, structural biology and protein therapeutics to advance transformational therapies into clinical development for patients. Gilead is a highly matrixed organization and the ability to work effectively across diverse functional groups and therapeutic areas is a key attribute for this role.


Specific Responsibilities


  • Develop robust biochemical/cell-based functional assays to measure drug candidate efficacy, potency, selectivity and other functional properties.
  • Contribute to several projects at any given time, work successfully in a cross-functional team environment and communicate clearly both verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
  • Perform automation assisted high-throughput screen to discover lead molecule from small molecule and large molecule drug discovery campaigns.
  • Perform in vitro functional assay to elucidate structure-activity relationship (SAR) for project progression.
  • Interpret experimental outcomes and present results in project team meetings.
  • Evaluate and implement novel assay technologies to support advancement of internal programs and core platform functions.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Proven experience in performing, optimizing, troubleshooting in vitro biochemical and cell-based functional assay. Hands-on experience in lab automation is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to details.
  • Strong collaborative skills and enjoy working in multi-disciplinary project team environment.
  • BS with 6+ years or MS with 4+ years of relevant post graduate research experience in cell biology, biochemistry or a related biological science. Biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Clear oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven expertise in cell line culture, primary cell isolation/in vitro culture, multi-color flow cytometry or cell-based imaging analysis.
  • Solid proficiency in transfection, viral transduction, gene expression analysis (RT-PCR, qPCR) and common protein quantification methods (ELISA, MSD, Luminex, immunoblot, etc.)
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
