Associate Scientist - Biomarker Sciences


The Biomarker Sciences department is seeking a Associate Scientist to join the Biomarker Assay Technology group. Biomarker Assay Technology (BAT) is responsible for development, qualification and implementation of biomarker methods and assays across protein and nucleic acid-based assays, including ligand binding and enzymatic assays, flow cytometry, and transcript-measurement technologies across all therapeutic areas. In addition, BAT is also responsible for supporting PBMC collection related activities in clinical trials.


This is a location dependent, Foster City-based position.


Essential Duties And Job Functions


  • Must have strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Develop, document and qualify biomarker methods and assays to support pharmacodynamic and exploratory biomarker activities across therapeutic areas
  • Support PBMC collection in clinical trials through development of protocols and documents, web-based and in-person training of PBMC processing labs, assessment of PBMC processing lab technical proficiency, and maintenance of routine documentation
  • Work closely with Clinical Operations/Biomarker Operations teams on PBMC processing labs activation and documentation related activities
  • Act as a subject matter expert for PBMC and immunoassay related activities within the Biomarker Sciences department and cross-functionally with other Gilead groups
  • Must think critically and creatively, design and interpret experiments
  • Use strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to communicate through high impact and clear presentations on data to the department, working groups, project teams, and clinical laboratory sites.
  • Explore and evaluate new assay technologies and platforms
  • Develop, document and validate protocols for liquid handling systems
  • Must be able to work independently and to determine appropriate resources for resolution of problems


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:
  • Familiarity and/or experience with flow cytometry and genomics assay platforms
  • BSc in biological science field required
  • 5+ years of working experience required
  • Demonstrated skill in internal and external customer management
  • Demonstrated track record of attention to documentation and detail
  • Intensive hands-on experience on PBMC isolation, immunoassays across multiple platforms (including ELISA, MSD, Luminex, Ella, Quanterix, SMC, etc.), and cell culture technologies required


The salary range for this position is: $120,445.00 - $155,870.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
