Job Description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Associate Exhibition Manager. As a member of the Exhibition Planning and Administration (EP&A) Department, this position works closely with exhibition teams (Curators, Registrars, Designers, Conservators) and provides exhibition information and budget details to several departments, including Development, Learning and Engagement, Communications, Digital Media, Security, and others.

Responsibilities:

  • Works with Director and Associate Director of EP&A, and with Exhibition Managers in handling insurance specific to exhibitions he/she/they are coordinating or assisting on.
  • Serves as an Associate Exhibition Manager for small to medium scale exhibitions, collection rotations and display changes, performance installations, and collaborations within the context of MoMA’s robust exhibition program, overseeing and implementing all aspects of the planning process. Also serves as backup support to Exhibition Managers on large scale exhibitions.
  • Provides strategic analysis as needed.
  • Is responsible for other aspects of project stewardship.
  • Prepares and manages exhibition budgets.
  • Assists Exhibition Managers working on touring exhibitions, co-organized exhibitions, content licensing, and other collaborations.
  • May supervise seasonal intern, fellows and scholars.
  • Drafts and negotiates legal agreements (lender loan agreement forms, artist agreements, waivers, and other contracts) in consultation with the Associate Director of EP&A, Exhibition Managers as assigned, and the General Counsel’s Office.
  • Prepares and administers exhibition timelines, guiding the planning process simultaneously for several exhibitions at various stages of development.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
  • Convenes meetings, sends out meeting notes, and follows through on next steps.
  • Assists in the completion of applications for US Government Indemnity and Federal Immunity from Judicial Seizure.

Requirements:

  • Ability to form and maintain successful working relationships with museum staff, artists, lenders, tour venues, and other external contacts.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in exhibition project management, preferably in an arts, culture, and/or nonprofit environment.
  • Ability to efficiently manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in Google platforms, Microsoft Office, TMS, and other standard office procedures and equipment.
  • Proven diplomatic problem-solving capabilities.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in arts administration, museum studies, or art history preferred. Interest in and knowledge of 20th and 21st-century art is essential.

Reports to: Associate Director, Exhibition Planning and Administration

Salary range: Minimum of $60,000 to a maximum of $70,000 per annum
