JobSummary: The newly relaunched Union Square & Co. is an independent trade publisher that showcases top-tier talent and brands and gives space to unique perspectives and strong voices in adult and children’s publishing. Our robust program includes books, stationery, calendars, and games, as well as the adult eponymous imprint, the children’s imprints Union Square Kids and Boxer Books and Puzzlewright Press, which publishes pencil-and-paper puzzles, and Sterling Ethos, which publishes to magic and mystic-driven books and products.
We are seeking an associate editor, nonfiction and education to join our growing team! The associate editor collaborates with all members of the department in the acquisition and development of nonfiction titles for children, with a focus on trade nonfiction as well as educational workbooks, and the No Fear Shakespeare and SPARK publishing programs. The associate editor works closely with design, managing editorial, production, sales, and marketing teams at every step in the publishing process.
An employee in this position can expect an annual starting rate between $58,500 and $60,000 depending on experience, seniority, geographic locations, and other factors permitted by law.
- Insure successful and timely publication of all responsible titles.
- Develop the range, quality, and diversity of UNSQ KIDS’ front list educational titles.
- Collaborate with marketing, publicity, and sales teams to best position authors and their books in the marketplace.
- Present titles at sales conferences and account-specific presentations.
- Oversee co-edition/licensed title list management, working with multiple vendors as well as department editors to ensure a strategy-driven co-edition program that supports the overall list positioning.
- Oversee acquired nonfiction titles from start to finish, including agent and talent relations, contract negotiations, manuscript editing, project schedules, and creative direction.
- Acquire, edit, and package 20-25 titles per year, including original projects, licensed content, and educational program line extensions.
- Four + years book publishing experience, with a focus on educational and nonfiction content for preschool through high school aged readers.
- Strong interpersonal and organization skills are essential.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain author and agent relationships.
- Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
- Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
- Proven experience working with book titles from original concept to bound book.
- 4-year college degree or equivalent work experience required.
- Minimum 4 years of editorial experience in acquiring and developing content for kids and teens.
