Associate Director, Clinical Laboratory

Location: Onsite in San Francisco, CA

Our high volume, fast-paced San Francisco laboratory operations team is looking for a clinical laboratory leader. You are someone who will complement and guide our clinical laboratory team, as well as plan and own responsibility for scaling, developing, executing, and managing strategy and processes for the clinical lab. As a laboratory leader, you will ensure successful expansion of our test menu, validation, and maintain business continuity in the clinical laboratory. You will partner with site and operational leaders, as well as quality to ensure adherence to state, regulatory, and licensure requirements.

What You’ll Do:

• Support the effort of upstream process definition, improvement and troubleshooting by appropriate use of resources and by influencing cross functional teams such as Lab Directors, R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, and Laboratory Operations Support
• Provides leadership, and acts as a guide for the clinical laboratory team (licensed and unlicensed lab personnel)
• Responsible for for establishing operational objectives and work plans and delegates assignments to the team
• Directs and manages the day-to-day operations which includes all personnel activities, technical oversight, general workflow and budget, including overall health monitoring and escalation responsibility to senior leadership
• Receives assignments in the form of objectives and determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals
• Drive a culture of accountability
• Ensures compliance with federal state and local requirements.
• Contribute to space planning design and existing facility modifications as part of capacity planning
• Focuses on issues of diverse scope where analysis of situation(s) or data requires evaluation to assist in in decision making
• Coordinate new assay launches through process development, tech transfer and clinical validation as a cross functional stakeholder
• Provide guidance and leadership in the diagnosis and resolution of problems with a focus on process improvement
• Collaborate cross functionally to ensure effective resource utilization, planning, and execution of people, process, and products in alignment with Invitae’s global objectives and volume projections
• Conduct 1:1s for employee career development and coaching, and lead by example to create an inclusive culture that values high engagement
• Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork
• Coach and mentor lab team members
• Advise on scalability and product/services expansion to include clarity around site limitations and solutions
• Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures
• Defines, implements, and optimizes production operations to successfully achieve assay specific turnaround times with a shared focus on quality

What You Bring:

• Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Possession of a valid California CLS license and maintain throughout employment in position
• Validation experience in bringing new assays from assay development into production
• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Chemical or Biological Sciences; or Military Education equivalent
• 10+ years of experience managing a clinical laboratory
• Effective leadership, communication, strong problem-solving, and analytical skills
• Working knowledge and thorough understanding of state/federal/local and accreditation standards and requirements, such as ISO 13485/15189, GMP, GLP and or CAP/CLIA environment
• Strong understanding of molecular biology techniques, including NGS (next-generation sequencing) technologies, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR, sequencing, and data analysis
• Ability to coordinate and effectively manage a team of healthcare professional
• Experience with a highly automated clinical laboratory
