Job Description

Young Harris College seeks an innovative administrator to provide management of a housing and residential life program for over 1000 students. The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life will partner with multiple constituents to enhance the institution's academic mission and create a learning environment that addresses the holistic growth of students. The successful candidate will approach their work from an educational perspective, exhibit exemplary communication skills and contribute to developing a larger vision of the division and College.

This essential position will begin immediately. This is a full-time, live-on-campus position.

Job Summary

The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life is responsible for the overall management of a housing and residence life program for over 1000 students, including, but not limited to, all processes related to housing and management of residence halls for students, implementing an educational program plan for residence halls, personnel management, and budget development and oversight. The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life will recruit, select, train, and supervise a team of professional Residence Life Coordinators (RLC) and Resident Assistants (RA). The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life manages the Residence Life staff and functionality of one or more residence halls. The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life will also manage the Division of Student Development's on-call response team; work closely on a variety of student issues with faculty, academic leaders, and others across the University; and assist the Vice President of Student Development in developing and implementing strategic planning and special projects for the division of Student Development.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the facilitation of campus-wide programs, such as Homecoming, Family Weekend, and Visitation Days
  • Collaborate with Athletic Administration to support student-athlete success
  • Provide support to students, mediate disputes, and make appropriate referrals related to emotional, psychological, behavioral, and interpersonal conflicts and concerns
  • Develop and implement a programming plan to address the needs and interests of college students on a residential campus
  • Serve as a member of the Housing Accommodations Committee and oversee the compliance of housing accommodation policies
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff to facilitate academic programs in the residence halls
  • Build professional competencies by participating in ongoing training and development
  • Adjudicate housing violation in collaboration with the Student Conduct Administrator
  • Assist the Director of Conferences and Events Services as needed with summer programs
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Create and implement a process to recruit, hire, train, and supervise Residence Life staff
  • Responsible for all operations related to the management of a multi-building residential system for undergraduate students
  • Participate in campus-wide committees
  • Develop and manage an appropriate budget for the Residence Life department
  • Hold students accountable for college policy and behavioral guidelines

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Associate Dean and Director of Residence Life supervises three professional staff members and is responsible for the RA program. The professional staff members provide supervision to RAs. The Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the College's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints; resolving problems and assessing outcomes.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Counseling, or other related fields; minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous professional residence life experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Five or more years of experience in higher education administration and experience working in a small college environment is highly desirable -preference for an individual who has served at the director or equivalent level.
