Position Summary
University Advancement is seeking a highly experienced development professional with a proven track record of success in securing major and transformational gifts, organizational strategy and executive level leadership. The Assistant Vice President for Development Excellence will play an integral role in developing and coaching frontline fundraisers toward meeting and exceeding fundraising goals, serving as a regional and/or principal gift officer, and may assume temporary or interim leadership roles in development units.
The successful candidate will infuse diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of their role to contribute to inclusive excellence and to ensure colleagues and donors of all backgrounds feel represented and included.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Minimum of 10 years’ of experience as a development officer, or major gifts officer, in an institution of higher education or other nonprofit setting
  • Minimum of five years successfully leading teams within a complex organization.
  • Demonstrates active engagement and support of diverse individuals, opinions and perspectives, and actively engages with and supports the universities’ mission, vision and values.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all facets of fundraising, including annual fund, corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, principal gifts, stewardship, major gift fundraising, etc.
  • Demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitation, cultivation, and closing multiple gifts at $1,000,000 or more
  • Proven ability to successfully identify and build relationships with donors to connect their interests with opportunities in a higher education or other nonprofit organization
  • CFRE certification or PMP certification
  • Demonstrated ability to align strategy with actionable outcomes and recommendations
  • Experience in executive level leadership, especially in a University environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Ability to positively and professionally represent the University Advancement division, the President’s Office, and Colorado State University both on-campus and in the community at-large.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and lead teams toward aspirational goals

Essential Duties
Job Duty Category Program strategy and Major/Principal Gift Fundraising
Duty/Responsibility
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and execution of a highly performing Principal Gifts program.
  • Provide strategic direction for Development Excellence efforts and initiatives according to division-wide priorities including retention, performance, and continuity of operations.
  • Communicate key messages and information regularly to internal and external audiences.
  • Consider how pipeline, communication, events, and donor interactions are representative of, and inclusive to, donors of all backgrounds. Create positive relationships with external constituents of all backgrounds
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward regional alumni and friends capable of $250,000 and above gifts using a carefully planned moves management system and is responsible to understand and execute the Donors Bill of Rights.
  • Assume Major Gift Officer or management responsibilities as needed on an interim basis during times of turnover or vacancy to ensure continuity of service to donors and constituents and to keep teams on track toward annual goals.
  • Ensures an inclusive team environment where all employees feel valued, their ideas welcomed, and their contributions affirmed; contributes to the overall UA division culture and goals of inclusivity.

  • Mentor emerging leaders and mid-career professionals within University Advancement to help them reach goals and maximize their potential.
  • Support and enhance effective working relationships with other units within University Advancement.
  • Actively work to establish long-term partnerships and strengthen existing relationships within University Advancement and throughout the greater campus community.

  • Monitor work quality and ensure accuracy and deadlines of project responsibilities of the team.
  • Assist University Advancement leadership council with special projects as assigned.
