Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education is the administrative agency for the commonwealth’s public schools. VDOE works in partnership with Virginia’s 132 school divisions to support and improve teaching and learning, set high expectations for all students, and promote student safety, wellbeing, and health.
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to provide senior executive level leadership and direction for the Department of Teacher Education and Licensure. The Assistant Superintendent will provide leadership and supervision for developing a teacher pipeline that reduces vacancies and ensures every K-12 child in Virginia has a qualified and licensed teacher. This position will be responsible for critical areas of the VDOE strategic work, including launching school division grow your own programs, apprenticeship and residency pathways as well as deeply understanding how to transform teacher education programming, modernize licensure programming, build innovative licensure models to build a strong Virginia workforce, and oversee the professional practices team. This supervisory position directs teams that: provides technical consultation and guidance; coordinates programs and staff objectives; provides a focus to licensure and teacher education programs consistent with the Code of Virginia and Board of Education regulations; resolves teacher education issues, and makes policy determinations. Pursuant to Sections 2.2-3114 and 2.2-3115 of the Code of Virginia, this position has been designated to file an annual Statement of Economic Interests form.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to establish short-term solutions, long-range planning, project management and risk mitigation strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a large staff with diverse talents and skill sets.
- Demonstrated success in reducing teacher vacancies through innovative programs, partnerships with higher education, and unique school division solutions.
- Knowledge and skill in research methodologies and assessment and evaluation of school personnel.
- Extensive knowledge of innovative apprenticeship and residency programs including Grow Your Own and federally approved apprenticeship models.
- Deep understanding of innovative licensure practices and ability to communicate solutions for high needs vacancies fields including special education, CTE, and other specialized fields.
- Comprehensive knowledge of higher education system and proven ability to build relationships between higher education, licensure programs, and school divisions.
- Knowledge of teacher licensure regulations and requirements in Virginia in comparison to other state regulatory practices.
- Experience with implementing, maintaining, and monitoring a modern licensure system.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in education, business management, public administration, or organizational management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred.
