Job Summary
The Assistant Coach of football assists in all aspects of the intercollegiate football team including coaching the linebacker position group, coordination of video, recruiting, scheduling, program administration and budgeting. Additional responsibilities may include performing administrative duties as assigned at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
Salary Range for this position is expected to be: Minimum $54,000 – Maximum $56,000, depending on the level of experience and which position the candidate is offered.

Education/Skills Requirements
  • Working knowledge of NCAA and NESCAC rules and an understanding of the philosophy behind them
  • Ability to motivate and effectively communicate with student-athletes
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification must be maintained.
  • Administrative skills such as prioritization, organization, and budgeting are needed
  • Commitment to being a positive member of the Athletics Department, the College community and the ability to influence athletes to do the same
  • Knowledge of football skills and strategy and the ability to effectively teach them
  • Bachelor’s degree (Physical Education or related field) preferred OR a minimum of 5 years of coaching experience at the post secondary level and/or professional competitive experience
  • Willingness and ability to actively recruit qualified candidates to Bowdoin
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the standards of the College’s current Motor Vehicle Policy are required
  • The coach must be self directed and motivated and be able to work independently and work under pressure

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents
  • Experience successfully recruiting at a highly selective institution is preferred.
  • At least five years coaching at the secondary or post secondary level or three years experience working in a competitive collegiate environment is required
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching football is required.

Standard Work Days and Hours
Coaches are expected to be on campus during the academic year (late August – Reunion Weekend in June) and are expected to keep hours during this time that make them readily available to students. For full time coaches, this may involve greater than 40 hours per week in season of primary sport and varied weekly hours out of season.
  • Standard hours are variable depending on season.
  • It is expected that coaches will recruit during the summer months requiring possible additional travel.
  • Frequent overnight travel with student athletes is required during the football season.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings is needed for the role
