Job Description

Amherst College invites applications for the Assistant Coach of Football – Offensive Skills (QB or WR) position. Given Amherst’s distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.
The assistant coach will assist the head coach in all aspects of a highly competitive NCAA Division III football program. The position will include responsibilities such as recruiting correspondence and evaluations, daily operations, practice planning, coaching and scouting a diverse set of players, player development and various other administrative tasks as assigned by the head coach. The position requires an understanding of the role of intercollegiate athletics in a highly competitive academic environment. Requires night and weekend work, and overnight travel to away games and recruiting tournaments. The assistant coach takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College’s efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Summary of Duties and Responsibilities
Coaching
  • Schedules and conducts regular practice sessions daily or several times weekly during season. Maintains detailed statistics and records, evaluation reports, etc. for each student-athlete. Determines and implements strategy to obtain maximum team level and individual performance.
  • Develop student-athletes of character who are committed to fostering a campus environment of respect and inclusion.
  • Monitor academic progress of football student-athletes. Understand academic needs, communicate with faculty liaisons, identify any issues that may occur, and provide direction and guidance when necessary.
  • Assist in evaluation of opponents and develop game strategies for scouting reports
  • Establish strong relationships with student-athletes and maintain effective lines of communication.
  • Actively involved in video and live scouting of opponents
  • Maintains continual and thorough familiarity with all applicable NESCAC, NCAA, and college rules and regulations, and complies with same.
  • Teaching, analyzing performance, and coaching game techniques and strategies of football in preparation for and during athletic competitions.
Recruiting
  • Actively participates in phone calls and recruitment of potential student-athletes
  • Coordinate and organize student-athlete on-campus visits
  • Actively participates in creating a dynamic and inclusive recruiting plan for the football program.
  • Primary organizer of recruiting tournaments for efficient evaluation of talent
  • Primary coordinator of recuiting correspondence and database management
  • Lead the effort to scout and recruit high-achieving prospective student-athletes from geographically and demographically diverse populations.
Program responsibilities
  • Actively participate in game management as a second job assignment
  • Perform any and all other related duties as assigned or directed by the head coach
Qualifications
Required:
  • Collegiate playing and/or coaching offensive skills experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting the development of student-athletes from varied backgrounds
  • Strong recruiting skills.
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic planning.
  • Outstanding organizational, communication, writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills and the capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • A valid driver’s license and successful credentialing is required in order to operate College vehicles.
  • Ability to work independently and to exercise sound judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and other non-traditional schedules
  • Ability to travel (by car, air, train, bus) domestically and internationally as needed for competition, recruiting, fundraising, or professional development
