Summary


Information & Responsibilities


The Assistant Event and Digital Media Manager will provide production accountability in all aspects of HASOM concert productions.


The ideal candidate will possess solid technical skills and forward-thinking solutions. The Assistant Event and Digital Media Manager position will provide productions that reflect the industry standards in concert experience, broadcasting, and documentation. The Assistant Event and Digital Media Manager will align HASOM productions with current standards and implement practices, procedures, and technology to lead industry standards.


The Assistant Event and Digital Media Manager supports the Production Manager in putting together a technical plan for the concert and executes said plan with the concert production crew. This part of the process should be proactive, positive, and not restrictive within reason. This position Invites positive feedback and collaboration to any creative thinking or idea for the use of our concert spaces. Also, channel counts, typical seating arrangements, and other technical strictures should not dictate creative boundaries for our events.


The Assistant Event and Digital Media Manager oversees the production crews and assists the Production Manager and Technical Faculty in recruiting and training the production crews for School of Music concerts. The majority of the crew members are students, and managing and guiding them need to be understood as a pedagogical endeavor.


The Assistant Event Manager also supports and advises independent productions and other CalArts productions as seen necessary by the Production Manager.


Requirements


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


Utilize Online Tools To Deliver The Following


  • Assist in preparing online concert / institute event scheduling forms.
  • Create, update, and maintain an online inventory that details our concert production flow, contains basic information, and houses all necessary forms.
  • Shared concert programs should be made digitally available as PDF files a day before a concert in order to be included as an element in our broadcasts and to be archived with the documentation media files.
  • Manage the HASOM concert archive in collaboration with the Library department. It should be accessible online but not necessarily made public.
  • Assist in preparing the technical needs form for scheduled concert events that students, faculty, and visiting artists can complete online.
  • Assist in reviewing and sharing spreadsheet information in relation to concert details.


General Duties In Relation To Equipment Maintenance And Organization


  • Work towards practical and effective storage practices and solutions.
  • Help maintain and document the concert production related inventory.
  • Work towards keeping production spaces safe and organized.


During a Concert


  • Other duties during a concert include: preparing for the next production, managing the media archives, work on a HASOM media web page, etc.
  • Monitoring the broadcasting stream and keeping the broadcasting crew member engaged, listening, and properly framing shots.
  • Leading the back office where they can routinely investigate and oversee the entire concert to ensure a successful production.


After a Concert


  • Confirm the equipment and concert hall are secured at the end of the concert.
  • Confirm the locally recorded broadcast video and audio files are organized and uploaded to a functional archive.
  • Confirm the video broadcast platform (i.e. YouTube) is in order and that the broadcast is archived properly.
Qualifications


Skills/Abilities


  • Ability to manage, produce, record, and live-stream concerts and events in the context of a music school focusing on experimental music.
  • Possess collaborative leadership style
  • Ability to utilize online management tools and possess a strong understanding of digital media in relation not only to audio production but also event-broadcasting and digital archiving.
  • Ability to troubleshoot the most common audio and video issues before and during a live production environment.
  • Ability to implement and maintain electronic and technological standards, tools, and techniques.
  • Ability to implement and maintain industry standards in concert experiences, broadcasts, and documentation.
  • Programming skills – proficient in Logic Pro, Ableton, Max/MSP, Pro Tools, QLab SuperCollider, ChucK, Nodal.
  • Ability to install software and diagnose computer-related technical issues.
  • Active composers or musicians


Education


  • MFA or higher in Music Composition, Instrumental Arts, or Music Technology.


Experience


  • 2 years of live broadcasting
  • 5 years of teaching experience in an academic music environment
  • 5 years of audio production
  • 2 years of video projection and interfacing
  • 2 years of archiving and digital asset management experience
  • 5 years of experience in audio and video software
  • 5 years of experience in Concert and Event Production


FURTHER INFORMATION


The hours for this position would primarily be from 5 PM to 11 PM on concert days. This position will be required to be onsite for setup, soundcheck, the concert, and strike. This position will be the lead manager and ultimate decision maker for the production. This position is responsible for overseeing the production crew, handling critical technical issues, soundchecks flow, and dealing with emergencies. They ensure concerts start and end as scheduled.
