KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS NEEDED IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of Health Department standards as related to pool hygiene.
- Must be knowledgeable in swimming pool operations, chemical balance and mechanics. Thorough knowledge of aquatics, pool programming, safety and maintenance.
- Knowledge of recent developments in pool management, equipment and trends in aquatics.
Abilities:
- Ability to organize swimming lessons programs and schedules, working with community groups.
- Initiative, creativity and perseverance are necessary qualities for the position.
- Ability to create aquatic events for recreational purposes.
- Ability to use a computer.
Skills:
- Good organizational skills.
- Public speaking and teaching skills are necessary to train staff and provide community instruction.
- Must possess good swimming and safety skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
- Prepare and monitor annual aquatics budget.
- Coordinate maintenance and repair projects and assist with the development of scope of work for major repair and renovation projects.
- Ensure proper fiscal controls, procedures and accountability with all revenues generated at aquatic facilities.
- Develop and implement aquatic policies and procedures.
- Must be able to produce reports, maintain records and data using a computer.
- Responsible for the recruitment, hiring and scheduling of staff.
- Develop preventive maintenance and equipment replacement schedules.
- Monitor, handle and apply chemicals for swimming pools, conduct inspections of pool motors, pumps, chemical filtration systems, chemical controllers, chemical feeders, pool heaters and other equipment to determine operating conditions and needed repairs.
- Seek and secure funding for water safety programming.
- Ensure that aquatic facilities are operated in compliance with the Florida Department of Health regulations, Chapter 64E-9, governing public swimming pools and bathing places.
- Ensure the cleanliness, water quality, chemical testing and balancing of pools is maintained according to the Florida Department of Health Standards.
- Determines when super-chlorination and ph adjustments are required.
- Performs related work as requested or assigned.
- Work with community groups to provide swimming lessons and aquatic events.
- Ensure safety of aquatic facilities, staff and patrons.
- Develop, implement and oversee aquatic programs, activities and events.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: During emergency conditions, all County employees are automatically considered emergency service workers. County employees are subject to being called to work in the event of a disaster, such as a hurricane, or other emergency situation and are expected to perform emergency service duties, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Use of both arms and legs. Good vision and hearing with or without correction. Good physical condition to lead activities or training exercises. Some lifting and loading of 30-50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Routine work outside in the sun (sunscreen will be provided), heat, and water.
WORK HAZARDS: Inherent risk of injury while participating in physical activity. Work with chemicals utilized for restroom and facility cleaning. Exposure to sun (sunscreen will be provided), heat and water.
SAFETY EQUIPMENT USED OR NEEDED: Ring buoy, shepherd’s crook, whistle, trauma bag (first aid kit, defibrillator, oxygen cylinder, gloves, biohazard bags), rescue tube, backboard, handicapped lift.
EDUCATION: Must have a bachelor’s degree in physical education, recreation, health education or equivalent or a comparable amount of job related experience.
EXPERIENCE: Five years in a combination of pool management, pool programming, water safety instruction, training, lifesaving and water rescue experience. Experience in administration, budgeting, safety and working with the public and employees. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: Must have a valid Florida driver’s license with a good driving record. Current certifications in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR, First Aid and Water Safety, Lifeguard Instructor Training. Certified Swim Coach is desired. Certification as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred. A Certified Pool Operator’s certificate must be acquired within six [6] months from the date of hire. FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700, & 800 must be completed within three (3) months of date of hire.
Pay Grade 20
Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT SCREENING: This position requires a physical, drug testing, driver's license verification and level 2 background screening which includes fingerprinting.
