What We Want
The Division of Research is seeking an Animal Welfare Specialist who will be responsible for providing first line response under general supervision to questions and concerns from investigators, administrators, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs); and providing key support to the Animal Welfare Office (AWO) to continue compliance and accreditation-related activities, and coordination of the AWO outreach and education initiative. We seek to hire a candidate with a Bachelor's degree, two years of experience in a related area such as research compliance, grant administration, research administration, animal facility management, and/or experience in a biomedical research laboratory with animal subjects. The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of basic regulatory requirements for research/teaching/testing involving animals, general knowledge of biomedical terminology, biomedical procedures, molecular biology terminology and/or general animal husbandry and be Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) professional certification. Salary: Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire’s experience.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of experience in a related area such as research compliance, grant administration, research administration, animal facility management, and/or experience in a biomedical research laboratory with animal subjects.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • Knowledge and experience working with database and spreadsheet software.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • General knowledge of biomedical terminology, biomedical procedures, molecular biology terminology and/or general animal husbandry.
  • Working knowledge of basic regulatory requirements for research/teaching/testing involving animals.
  • Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) professional certification.
Responsibilities
  • PROTOCOL REVIEW -Assists with the administrative processes and activities of the Animal Welfare Office including planning, interpreting, and coordinating procedural activities in compliance with Federal guidelines and regulations and institutional policies. Monitors document submissions, reports, and notices for quality control, and maintains records and databases. Based on knowledge of institutional guidelines, and federal regulations for animals in research/teaching/testing, assists in consulting and advising the faculty, staff, and students in the preparation of protocols, amendments, and personnel requests. Reviews incoming documentation and determines the review process for incoming protocols based on regulatory knowledge of institutional guidelines and Federal regulations. Provides preliminary review of submissions including determination of status, in order to give feedback to the customer to improve the product. Ensures research compliance protocols are being adhered to and implemented by researchers, staff, and students. Updates and distributes policies and procedures. Tracks overdue responses and reviews and manages reminder process for both. Tracks protocol expirations and manages reminder process. Performs grant congruency reviews and makes compliance updates to grants management system.
  • ANIMAL WELFARE OFFICE RESOURCE & CONTACT-Assists in providing guidance to faculty, and other program participants on implementation of policies and procedures in compliance with institutional and federal regulatory requirements. Assists with research compliance training programs for faculty and staff. Assists with developing and modifying standard office procedures (SOPs). Reviews and stays abreast of SOPs. Responsible for effective communication and timely responses related to compliance reviews. Responds to questions regarding the compliance program and electronic protocol submission system. Responds to incoming departmental emails and telephone calls and performs triage for other staff.
  • RECORDS MANAGEMENT- Provides quality assurance oversight of data entry related to document submissions, reports, and notices. Disseminates documents and materials for review and monitors deadlines. Maintains electronic and paper files ensuring all are up-to-date and complete.
  • ACUC SUPPORT-Assists supervisor with outside agencies and staff to ensure appropriate programs are in place to meet Federal and institutional requirements. Assists supervisor with preparing and submitting reports. Provides support for committee meetings by preparing and disseminating review materials, reports, and other meeting related documents, and follows up on committee directed actions. Provides other administrative support including drafting correspondence, creating reports, staffing assistance for training or other special functions and events. Reviews and prepares correspondence and minutes based on committee decisions, monitors deadlines and tracks completion of required actions as assigned.
