This position serves in a regional capacity. Persons serving in this role are required to assume residency in Montgomery, Bond, Christian, Fayete, Macoupin, Sangamon or Shelby Counties and will be required to work from their home location as a base of daily operational headquarters to service their designated worksites.


The Illinois Department of Agriculture (AGR) administers an annual budget of more than $100 million and employs more than 300 people statewide, with several hundred more temporary employees hired during the Illinois State Fair and Du Quoin State Fair. Separate bureaus administer programs and services directed at conserving the state's land and water resources; protecting the health and welfare of livestock and companion animals; overseeing state and county fairs; regulating seed, feed and fertilizer products; ensuring the financial stability of grain dealers and warehouses; promoting Illinois food and agricultural products; and operating the state's horse racing program.

Position Overview

The Department of Agriculture is seeking to hire an Animal and Animal Products Investigator in the Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare. This position performs specialized inspections and/or investigations of establishments licensed by the Bureau of Animal Health and Welfare. Job Responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Investigates alleged complaints of inhuman treatment or improper care of animals
  • Enforces the rules and stautues for which the Bureau has responsibility pertaining to dead animal disposal.
  • Investigates unlicensed establishments to determine if there is a necessity to license
  • Prepares and submits inspection reports and follows up on any investigation initiated by employee or assigned by the Bureau.
  • Performs annual inspections of licensed establishments.
  • Performs initial inspections of establishments applying for licensure by the Bureau under a variety of acts including the Illinois Animal Welfare Act and Illinois Livestock Auction Market Law.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of two years of college with coursework in animal husbandry or law enforcement or a related field.
  • Requires one year of professional experience in a compliance enforcement capacity in an agricultural industry or evidence of completion of an approved agency training program.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Prefers working knowledge of procedures utilized in gathering and assembling evidence, in determining compliance and in initiating formal corrective action on violations.
  • Prefers experience applying various laws, rules, and regulations to determine noncompliance and prepare and maintain routine records and reports.
  • Prefers working knowledge of licenses, health records and certificates and record keeping practices required for the operation of a business entity.
  • Prefers elementary knowledge of agency policies and procedures regarding the inspection of animals and the investigation of complaints and suspected violations.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must reside in Bureau, Whiteside, Lee, LaSalle, Putnam, Marshall, Stark or Henry County.
  • Requires a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a state vehicle in performance of duties.
  • Requires the ability to successfully pass a background check.
