Job Description
Position Overview

The Animal Shelter Attendant located within the Animal Services Department performs routine clerical and responsible animal care work in support of the operations of the County Animal Shelter. Employees receive general supervision in daily activities, with more difficult situations performed under the direct supervision or in conjunction with the Lead Shelter Attendants or the Animal Shelter Manager.

Examples of Duties

  • Make routine inspections of animals and their cages to monitor health, safety, and cleanliness of cages
  • Provide daily custodial care for animals in the shelter such as feeding, handling, watering, cleaning, medicating, and transporting for outside medical care or procedures
  • Assist with unloading, handling and securing of animals that may be injured, aggressive or temperamental
  • Attendants must always remain calm and professional and be considerate of high emotions involving the public, the animals, and other sensitive and various situations
  • Vaccinates, deworms, weighs and photographs all incoming animals
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining various records pertaining to animal identification, animal populations, animal claims, and adoptions
  • Exercise and socialize animals
  • Maintain the safety of all animals during transport to and from the shelter
  • Assists with euthanasia of animals as necessary
  • Provide extensive public contact and responds to routine inquiries or requests for services. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers to ensure open communication

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and a willingness to work with animals in shelter environment.

Employees must obtain
  • Certified Euthanasia Technician, Rabies Vaccinator certification, and Red Cross First Aid certification for animals and humans within 6 months of hire.
  • Fear Free Shelter certification within 60 days of hire.

Employees must complete pre-exposure rabies vaccine series after hire or show proof of prior vaccination against rabies and have an adequate titer.

Management Preference: one (1) year experience in shelter, boarding kennel or veterinary office environment.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire


Negative drug screen and background check are required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to perform specific diagnostic testing
  • Knowledge of vaccination requirements and proper techniques, animal shelter policies and procedures
  • Knowledge in modern office practices and procedures, animal disease management/recognition and general animal care
  • Ability to perform physical exams and identify and address medical problems/diseases
  • Ability and knowledge to perform specific treatments/procedures (i.e. wound closure/repair and fluid replacement)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with the public and to maintain composure in stressful situations
