Job Description
The Analytical Chemist I is the first level in this series within the Forensic Chemistry Unit (FCU). Under close supervision, the incumbent develops skills to conduct standardized laboratory testing to analyze and report the presence of controlled substance evidence submitted from law enforcement agencies within the state of Delaware. The Level II position trains lower-level chemists and completes administrative reviews in addition to processing casework.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Prepares reports identifying samples, explains testing methods and documents findings and conclusions of analysis.
  • Analyzes laboratory data to determine quantity and quality of toxins, pathogens, chemical and biochemical constituents.
  • Uses analytical chemistry techniques including state-of-the-art instrumentation to gather data involving samples.
  • Prepares samples for instrument analysis, interprets instrument recordings and documents test results.

Job Requirement Series

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist I
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Possession of a Bachelors degree or higher in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, Biology or related field.

OR

  • Six months experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
  • Six months experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry.
  • Six months experience in conducting clinical laboratory tests.
  • Six months experience in performing mathematical and statistical computations on laboratory test data.

JOB REQUIREMENTS for Analytical Chemist II
Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Six months experience in generating and interpreting chemical test data by performing quantitative and/or qualitative statistical analysis.
  • Six months experience in selecting laboratory test methods and procedures.
  • Six months experience in physical, organic, inorganic or analytical chemistry.
  • Six months experience in using laboratory equipment and instrumentation including calibration and maintenance.
  • Six months experience in technical report writing.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
