Job Description
We are is a leading conservation organization dedicated to preserving biodiversity and protecting endangered species. We are currently seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join our dynamic team as the Agave Restoration Coordinator. This is a full-time position within our Conservation Department, offering a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on bat conservation efforts.
As the Agave Restoration Coordinator, you will play a vital role in expanding our Agave Restoration Initiative in the United States. Joining a diverse and dedicated team, you will collaborate closely with the Agave Restoration Program Manager and the Habitat Protection and Restoration Team (HP&R). Together, you will lead the charge in forging multi-sectoral partnerships and coordinating on-the-ground restoration activities with our staff and valued partners.
You will be an integral part of our distributed organization, with the flexibility of working remotely from the comfort of your home. However, please note that extensive travel within the beautiful landscapes of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas will be required. If you are based in or near these states, your application will be given preference. Additionally, there may be exciting opportunities for travel to stunning agave restoration sites in Mexico.
Our Agave Restoration Initiative focuses on safeguarding and revitalizing ecosystems that are crucial for the survival of pollinating bats and local communities. Through this bi-national initiative, we have established strong partnerships with over 65 organizations from diverse sectors, including conservation, government, academia, and business. By collaborating with experts from the United States and Mexico, we develop culturally and environmentally suitable strategies for agave restoration, garnering local support in key areas.
As the Agave Restoration Coordinator, your responsibilities will encompass various areas:
Program Implementation and Logistics (estimated 50% of your time)
Serve as the primary coordinator for agave restoration work in the United States, planning and communicating with our team and partners for field activities like agave plantings, seed collection, and eDNA surveys.
Take the lead in organizing and executing agave restoration field work, including travel arrangements, gathering necessary materials, and training our field crews and volunteers.
Contribute to the planning of regional agave meetings and actively participate in virtual and in-person conferences and public outreach events.
Program Development (estimated 40% of your time)
Forge and strengthen partnerships for the Agave Restoration Initiative in the United States, collaborating with non-profit organizations, land managers, native plant nurseries, government agencies, tribal partners, and local interest groups.
Work closely with the Agave Restoration Program Manager to establish priority objectives, actions, and outcomes for agave restoration projects in the United States.
Support grant development and assist with report writing, showcasing the impact of the Agave Restoration Initiative.
Contribute to the creation of engaging material that communicates the program's accomplishments, successes, and needs through various channels such as annual reports, newsletters, social media, and grant applications.
Administration (estimated 10% of your time)
Assist in program budgeting for agave restoration activities in the United States, collaborating with external partners to co-develop project goals and work plans.
Contribute to the creation and management of external partner contracts, maintaining regular communication for updates, impact metrics, and reports.
Organize and maintain U.S. agave planting and restoration data within our existing databases.
Develop and enhance field survey tools, protocols, and databases as needed to ensure efficient agave restoration efforts.
Collaborate with our Social Media Manager, providing valuable information to showcase and promote our agave restoration work to the public.
We encourage our staff to explore opportunities within other teams to broaden their understanding of our programs and build relationships with colleagues from different backgrounds. You may have the chance to contribute to initiatives such as watershed restoration, cultural resource surveys, subterranean wildlife surveys, drone surveys, and acoustic surveys. We offer on-the-job training, and additional safety certifications may be available.
To excel in this role, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:
Required Knowledge/Experience
5 years of experience in conservation or restoration, collaborating with federal, state, and/or private partners.
Proven experience in planning and implementing field work, including training and leading field teams and volunteers.
Track record of building and maintaining long-term relationships with conservation partners.
Ability to engage with external partners in project development and completion.
Experience in coordinating and managing projects, ensuring accountability and meeting deadlines.
Familiarity with public lands management agencies and the ability to professionally interact with agency employees.
Moderate to high level of physical fitness.
Valid driver's license.
Preferred Knowledge/Experience
An undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as natural resource management, wildlife sciences, ecology, conservation, or related disciplines.
Knowledge and experience in botanical, ecological, and/or horticultural practices, particularly related to agaves and plants in the Southwest United States.
Understanding of natural resource issues in the Southwest United States.
Familiarity with restoration ecology, native plant restoration, and restoration field techniques.
Experience developing and leading community-based conservation and citizen science programs.
Proficiency in using hand tools, off-trail navigation, and data collection tools such as Survey123.
Comfortable with or willing to learn 4x4 off-road driving.
Certifications in first aid and CPR (training provided if necessary).
Valid passport for potential international travel, primarily to Mexico.
