Job Description
Afterschool Specialist


Homes for the Homeless, Inc is seeking an exceptional, enthusiastic, and dedicated Afterschool Education Specialist for our K-12 programs. Our program classrooms are part of a new facility that will house families and children experiencing homelessness. The Education Specialist plays a significant role in supporting the quality of an afterschool program that promotes academic achievement while also providing a fun and safe space for New York City's most vulnerable kids.


About Homes For The Homeless, Inc.


Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


  • Promote positive impactful learning with program participants.
  • Monitor/track daily attendance and create attendance initiatives as needed
  • Responsible for recruiting program participants within Family Residence and Community
  • Create recreational and academic curriculum/lesson plans that supports NYC DOE school-day curriculum
  • Infuse STEM based learning in lesson plans and e nsure all structured activities have clearly defined outcomes (measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for participants).
  • Perform other duties and tasks assigned by Recreation Director
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with parents, school administrators and personnel.
  • Nurture a fun/ safe environment within classroom.
  • Participate in staff meetings, conferences, and trainings
  • Lead activities with program participants virtually and in-person.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Kind, creative, flexible, and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the afterschool program staff team.
  • M ust be willing to consent to job clearances, as directed by State and Local law.
  • Has worked in an afterschool / recreational setting for at least two years.
  • Associate/Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
  • Sensitivity and awareness while working youth experiencing temporary housing.
  • Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development and implementation of structured programming.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred
