Actuary I (Actuary)
This position is in the Property and Casualty Actuarial Office of the Property and Casualty Division. The Actuarial office provides actuarial review of rate and rule filings; reviews credit models for compliance; conducts in-depth analyses of the Texas insurance markets; and conducts various other analysis.
This position:
- Conducts actuarial review and analysis of property and casualty filings to ensure compliance with the Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Conducts research, assists with data calls, assists with data review and analysis, and assists with preparation of technical reports to monitor the insurance market.
- Prepares summaries of findings and makes recommendations for approval or disapproval of regulated rates.
- Develops actuarial and statistical exhibits.
- Reviews and evaluates ratemaking techniques and their appropriateness in developing rates for various lines of insurance.
- Reviews actuarial opinions, reports, and memorandums in rate and rule filings, form filings, credit model filings, underwriting guideline filings, and information submitted to comply with filing requirements or special data requests.
This position requires:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with degree in statistics, mathematics, actuarial science, risk management, or a related field.
- College transcript submitted with application.
- Professional exams passed toward associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society must be listed in the application, resume, or cover letter.
Note: Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.
Additional job details:
This position may be eligible for hybrid telecommuting. Employees must have a secure, dedicated workspace with Internet service, ability to maintain a reliable consistent work schedule, and be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams and other applications during regular business hours.
Preferences for this position include:
- One exam toward associateship in the Casualty Actuarial Society
- Experience in property and casualty insurance; and
This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:
- Actuarial formulas, methods, and procedures.
- Applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Loss reserving and pricing methods, assumptions, and calculations.
This position requires demonstrated skill in:
- Using Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
- Planning, decision-making and problem-solving.
- Using standard office equipment.
- Applying actuarial principles and techniques.
- Effective oral and verbal communication.
This position requires the demonstrated ability to:
- Interpret insurance rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Develop, prepare, and present technical reports, correspondence, and presentations for consumers, public officials, industry representatives, and other groups.
- Research and solve problems.
- Apply critical thinking.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external customers.
