The Accountant manages the accounts and all financial records; prepares and issues financial statements and reports for review by the CFO, CEO and finance committee of the board. They advise and assist the Chief Financial Officer in planning for and managing the financial reporting and accounting systems for the attainment of the organizations mission and financial objectives.
What you will do:
- Support and assist with the development of finance specialist staff for accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll and program accounting support.
- Responsible for monthly and year-end closing entries and aids in audit preparation.
- Contribute to the day-to-day administration and control of the accounting functions to safeguard the Councils assets and to ensure financial transactions are timely, processed accurately, and recorded in keeping with generally accepted accounting practices and principles; monitors payroll trends and works in conjunction with HR to ensure compliance, accuracy, and timeliness of processes and reports.
- Monitor and stay current with accounting and tax trends affecting non-profit industry.
- Ensure that Forms 990, 5500, 1099, state sales tax filing, property tax listings and quarterly payroll taxes are filed on a timely basis.
- Ensure accounting information generated from membership database (Salesforce) and fund-development database is reconciled.
- Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, and financial trends to assist executive team in decision-making and goal execution.
- Ensure that all Council financial operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, federal, and not-for-profit regulations, guidelines, and laws.
- Assist with annual Council budget development and monitoring. Prepares monthly actual vs. budget reports for operations.
- Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger.
- Maintain the accuracy of temporarily restricted assets, permanently restricted assets and fixed assets records including acquisition and disposition of fixed assets, construction, improvements, and maintenance are recorded.
- Maintain the chart of accounts, including adding new codes according to GSUSA guidelines.
- Participate actively in the development of environments that foster diversity, equity, inclusion and access through words, actions and attitude. Contributes to the DEI goals of the Council by assuring that all plans reach out to all racial/ethnic groups, and provide equal access by acquiring knowledge and understanding of DEI and exhibiting a non-discriminatory attitude in all internal and external working relationships
Who we are looking for:
- Experience and proficiency in accounting software package is required. Experience with Financial Edge and/or Abila is preferred.
- Experience in nonprofit accounting and fund accounting is strongly preferred.
- Advanced MS Excel skills with experience using Vlookups and pivot tables.
- A person with a bachelors degree in accounting or closely related field and a minimum of three years of accounting experience is required.

- Subscribe to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement and become and remain a registered member of GSUSA, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont.
- Successfully pass criminal and driver background investigation.
- Must have consistent drive, persistence, sense of urgency, flexibility, willingness to learn, and resilience to manage change.
- Valid state-issued drivers license, valid auto insurance, acceptable driving record and access to a vehicle on a daily basis and willingness and ability to travel throughout the councils geographic area.
- Commitment to providing top-notch customer service for all internal and external contacts with a desire to resolve customer inquiries on first contact
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and sound-decision making and work independently and in partnership with others to achieve goals and objectives.
