Overview A Surgical Tech is a healthcare professional who assists in surgical operations under the supervision of a surgeon, registered nurse, or other surgical personnel. They are responsible for preparing the operating room, setting up surgical equipment, and providing assistance to the surgeon during the procedure. Detailed Job Description Surgical Techs are responsible for preparing the operating room for surgery, including setting up the sterile field, instruments, and equipment. They also help the surgeon during the procedure by passing instruments, providing suction, and helping to control bleeding. They may also be responsible for cleaning and sterilizing instruments, preparing patients for surgery, and helping to move patients to and from the operating room. Job Skills Required Surgical Techs must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure. They must also be able to follow instructions and work as part of a team. In addition, they must be able to work with a variety of medical equipment and instruments. Job Qualifications Surgical Techs must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and must complete an accredited surgical technology program. They must also be certified by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Job Knowledge Surgical Techs must have a thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
